It could be the Key, it could be the Rectifyer Ring, it could be the Immoblizer.

2002 Chrysler PT cruiser has only 28,000 miles the engine light came on. I retrieved error codes p0134, p1684 and P1685. I found a list of the codes but no description. Can you tell me what these mean

I found the codes & basic (VERY basic) descriptions from these sources:
http://www.ptcruiserclub.ru/ptobderr.htm

http://kentuckyptcruisers.weebly.com/obdii-codes.html

Code P0134 O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1 Sensor 1) - something to do with the O2 sensor circuit, but beyond that I'm not sure.

Code P1685 Skim Invalid Key - Security system issue. I got this answer from the Dodge Forum:

"The Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) is part of the security system and kills the vehicle when a wrong key is used. There may be a problem with your key or the chip reader in the ignition switch. This is something the dealer will need to determine for sure. This code will also be set if someone actually tried to steal the vehicle."

I have two codes coming up p.0051 and p 1685 i had to replace the fuel pump and now my radio can be tuned in but no sound can anyone help?

under the back seat is the amplifier and i suspect that you disturbed a multiplug when the pump was changed
P1685 The SKIM (Smart Key Immobilizer Module) has received an invalid key

P0051 HO2S Heated Oxygen Sensor -Control Circuit Low (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
check the sensor with a multimeter is the sensible option here before you replace it in case its a dirty or corroded multiplug connection

P1685

Hi Eugenius:
There were a few bulletins about a no start for that year. Sometimes it is low fuel pressure and on some there is an update for the computer programming. Here is one of them

PCM - Engine No Start Condition Notes

NUMBER: 18-13-99
GROUP: Vehicle Performance
DATE: June 18, 1999
SUBJECT: Engine No-Start
OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the JTEC Powertrain Control Module (PCM) (calibration change 99 CaI 18).

MODELS: 1999 (WJ) Grand Cherokee
NOTE :THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE APRIL 27, 1999 (MDH 0427XX) AND NOT EQUIPPED WITH THE SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER (SKIM) SYSTEM.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION: An engine no-start or an engine crank-start-die condition may exist with vehicles not equipped with SKIM. Diagnostic Trouble Codes P1685 "SKIM Invalid Key" and/or P1686 "No SKIM BUS Messages Received" may be present in the PCM.

This condition may be due to erroneously learning of SKIM by the PCM. In most cases, the vehicle will start once the vehicle battery has been disconnected to reset the PCM.

DIAGNOSIS: Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS/MDS2) and or the Diagnostic Scan Tool (DRB III R ) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures Manual, verify all engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are present, record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin. If no DTC's are present, and the above symptoms have been experienced, perform the Repair Procedure.

NOTE :WHENEVER A POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) IS REPLACED DUE TO FAILURE, THE SOFTWARE OF THE REPLACEMENT CONTROLLER MUST BE VERIFIED FOR THE LATEST REVISION LEVEL. USE THE FLASH PROCEDURE TO UPDATE REPLACED CONTROLLERS AS NECESSARY.

PARTS REQUIRED: 01 04669020 Label, Authorized Software Update 1 04275086 Label, Authorized Modification

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: 01 CH6OOO Scan Tool (DRB Ill) 1 CH7035 General Purpose Interface Bus Cable (GPIB) 1 CH7OOO/7001 J1962 Cable 1 MDS1 or MDS2

NOTE :THE MDS1IMDS2 AND DRB Ill ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM PART OF THIS REPAIR. IF USING THE MDS1 AND DRB Ill THE MDS MUST BE OPERATING AT RELEASE 21 OR HIGHER AND TIL CD RELEASE 1186 OR HIGHER MUST BE INSTALLED. IF USING THE MDS2 AND THE DRB III(R) THE SYSTEM MUST BE OPERATING AT CIS CD2035 OR HIGHER.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

P0702 p1685 fault code on 2.7crd merc transmission

DTC P0702 - Transmission Control System Electrical
There is a code in the ****** control module and need to check harnesses and wiring, as first step.

DTC P1685 - Skim Invalid Key
Transponder ID (in ignition key) is monitored with ignition on. DTC will set if transponder ID read by Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) does not match any transponder ID's stored in SKIM memory. Possible Causes:
- Incorrect VIN In PCM
- Invalid SKIM Key Present
- No Communication With SKIM
- No VIN Programmed In The PCM
- PCM SKIM Trouble Codes Set

I would suggest clearing all these codes, and drive it until the problem arises again, or the check engine light comes on, and then check for codes again. To clear the codes you will need to remove the negative battery cable, and touch it to the positive cable, for about 15 seconds. Then re hook and all the modules will be reset. If this isnt work, visit your Trans Service.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

I have a 04 pt cruiser with airbag light and chime intermittent fault code p1685

p1685,,"skim invalid key"
I have no idea what they are talking about, but that is the code.

DTC P1685 is Invalid SKIM Key. The Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) is part of the security system and kills the vehicle when a wrong key is used. There may be a problem with your key or the chip reader in the ignition switch. This is something the dealer will need to determine for sure. This code will also be set if someone actually tried to steal the vehicle.

My guesswould beto reset your PCM (unhook bat. and depress brake for 1 min), then try to start the car. If that doesn't work, I guess haul it into a dealership so they can run a diagnostic quote.gif

I got this from another site, check it out.

2000 neon check engine light is on

P1685 Skim Invalid Key.

The Sentry Key Immobilizer Module contains a Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver and a microprocessor. The SKIM transmits RF signals to, and receives RF signals from the Sentry Key transponder through a tuned antenna ring integral to the SKIM housing. When the ignition switch is turned to the On position, the SKIM transmits an RF signal to the transponder in the ignition key. The SKIM then waits for an RF signal response from the transponder. If the response received identifies the key as valid, the SKIM sends a valid key message to the PCM over the PCI data bus. If the response received identifies the key as invalid, or if no response is received from the key transponder, the SKIM sends an invalid key message to the PCM. The PCM will enable or disable engine operation based upon the status of the SKIM messages.
