If it is the switch that is bad, you can pull the switch and jumper the contacts to make the window go up, the disconnect the switch to keep people from trying to lower the window. If the motor is bad, you will have to remove the door panel and either manually turn the motor or remove the motor and push the window up. Then replace the motor so it can hold the window closed.

I need a new igniton switch I know but can't afford it. How can I temporarily fix this problem until it's replaced? (1998-Chevrolet caviler)

Take the old switch off so that the steering lock cannot activate.
Find the two wires that activate the ignition and connect to a separate switch, find the starter wire and connect it to a button. Flick the switch and press button to start engine.

pull the switch and short the two wires together until the window is up . Any $2.00 on-off switch will do the job.

How do I manually raise the window on power window

Could be switch. If you can access you may be able to "jump" or override the switch. otherwise take inner door panel off and do the same directly to the motor.

Need to remove the drivers door trim panel to determine problem with raising mechanism. John Chaney

Usually a broken cable, or the motor. To remove the trim, remove the speaker, then remove all the screws from inside the door handles. Then remove the screws around the edges of the trim panel. Prise the edge of the trim panel away from the door, and continue to pull until all the plastic clips are loose. Then just lift the panel up and off of the window ledge. Unplug electrical from the back of the switches, and the panel is then separated from the vehicle.

Replacing the window lifter is quite simple. Just unbolt the vertical chanels, and the motor, and the whole thing comes out. You can get refurbished lifters with the motor quite affordably from the dealer, or the auto parts store.

The window on the passengers side will not go back up. Once it went down, it stopped working. What needs replaced? Can I put the window up mechanically with out changing the electronics parts, until I can...

rock the switch back and forth hard and fast . this may jolt the switch to put the window up. Most likely it needs a switch. Super easy to replace. Get a thin flat head screwdriver and pry the switch up out of the console. Then remove the connector and reverse to reinstall. The switch should cost about $50.Also check the other window to see if the operate. If they dont it may be a fuse.

The driver side window will not go back up?

there are multiple things that could cause this, check for power and ground at window motor. (door panel removal required). If power and ground good in up and down switch positions suspect window motor. If power and gound good in down position only, suspect window switch. Test with known good switch prior to replacement if possible as switch assembly is costly. Used switch panel o.k. but if you can afford new one go for it. If window motor bad go for new or remanufactured one as window motors are known to fail and used one may fail quickly.
