SOURCE: how do you reset check engine light prob. fixed

I don't believe that a 199 will set a code for a loose cap. Either way, pull the fuse for the ECM (Electronic Control Module)

SOURCE: buying a '94 Volvo 940 GL auto

Im from the "land of volvo" sweden, and ive worked as a mecanik for 8 years, and i have NEVER ever had a customer who serverd his/her car every month, and never ever have i heard anyone else sya that they had. So maybe that woman had her car washed every month, thats normal...but she dident had the car on service every month, thats overkill so to say. Once in a year or every 20 000 kilometers is the normal service intervall. And the big sercice is when the volvo has run 140-150 000 kilometers. And thats the expenisve big service when you get a lot of parts replaced on the motor. Otherwise the normal service once a year or 20 000 kilometers is changing oli, changing filters, check on the breakes, check the tires, check the lamps etc.

I hope this info is usefull for you
Good luck

BTW, Volvo is a very very good and trusted car and wonderfull to drive

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you remove the positive battery connector and let it sit for atleast 10mins. or more before reconnecting it. This will reset the system and can get rid of the dash lights.
If the problem still persists, I suggest that you take it in to a reputable shop to have it resetted manually.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

My 2005 volvo xc90 is losing power during acceleration. the effect is momentary and I thought it was gas so I used additives. Now the engine light is on and the problem is more general. Any ideas? gas...

I had the same problem and the dealer told me it was one of the coil-over-sparkplug went bad and was causing intermittent misfires at certain RPM's (same as yours). I ordered a new coil for $200 or so then pulled each one out to test them one by one (Volvo won't tell you which one so they can do the work). In the process of doing this I found one of my OEM spark plugs (#5) had a crack on the ceramic insulation. So instead of changing the coil, I changed the plugs and it worked fine. It's been over 6 months I believe and I just had it smogged for registration, so I think it's fixed. I also read that the throttle body electronics on this model is a lemon and sometimes created the exact same symptoms. This is the cheapest way to start, and if you are lucky like me, you're done. If it is the coil, you can get a good aftermarket version on Amazon for less than $100 usd. Good luck. Volvo's are finicky people.... I mean vehicles.

My check engine light came on yesterday and after taking it to get the code , it was for the gas cap. I filled it up with gas and replaced the cap tightly. How do I get the light off.

It depends on the make and model of the vehicle. Some newer vehicles, once the car is driven with the cap loose, or the seal wears to the point of leaking pressure causing the light to come on, you must take it to the dealer or service center to get the light reset. You can try unhooking your negative battery cable for a few minutes to see if that erases the engine light.

My 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 service engine soon light comes on and says I have a faulty gas cap or a vacuum leak?

It would be really nice to know EXACTLY which code you are getting. However, since you mentioned gas cap, I will assume that you are getting Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0457.

First, you need to understand that DTCs (or fault codes) NEVER tell you what parts to replace. They only tell you which of the many circuits and systems monitored by your onboard computer network is malfunctioning. The circuit or system must then be properly diagnosed to determine the actual CAUSE of the failure. To do that, you need to follow the correct diagnostic procedure and you also need to know how the system is supposed to work, so you will know a malfunction when you see it.

Here is what is causing your confusion:
The standard definition for DTC P0457 is "Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (fuel cap loose/off)"
Please note here that the part about the fuel cap is in parenthesis. The MAIN description is "Evaporative System Leak Detected." This fuel cap part is only because this code is very often caused by people not putting their fuel cap on correctly, forgetting to put their fuel cap on at all or losing it, or refueling their engine with the engine running. So, this part of the DTC description is NOT telling you to replace the gas cap. It is only telling you to check for a loose or missing gas cap for a possible cause because it is so common.
What the code REALLY MEANS is that there is a HUGE leak in your EVAP system.

Please also note that a fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor that is not working correctly can also cause the computer to "think" that there is a huge leak when there is not...Hence, the need for proper diagnosis.

The operation of the FTP needs to be verified to make sure it is not "lying to the computer. All of the hoses, lines, tubes, charcoal canister, and other components of the EVAP system need to be inspected for cracks, tears, breaks, etc. that would cause a leak in the system.

I have a 2006 honda accord sedan. There is a orenge color engine shape sign on the left side (right under the head light sign) in the gauge. I need to know what does it mean?

Think this is your malfunction indicator light -indicates a problem with the emission control system. Generally caused by lose or missing gas cap. Make sure when putting gas cap back on that you turn it (tighten) so that it clicks three (3) times.

Nissan D22 Fault

You'll think I'm crazy but the gas cap may need replacing. They are vented. When they get stopped up, it throws a light and loses fuel pressure,
New gas cap...about $8.00.

Check Engine Soon

and........what? What do you want to know? Bring it to a mechanic or Ford dealer service dept to troubleshoot what caused the indicator to light. Another possible is, on the last time you filled up with gas, did you make sure to put the gas cap on securely; this can cause a "Check Engine" light.

Engine light continues to come on we have had to the shop three times and it continues to come on after just a few miles. shop says everything is ok but ?????

I have a XC-0- 2006. The engine light came on. The dealer replaced the pump in the full system. He said the pump was leaking causing the light to go on. This pump creates a vaccum / maybe pressure in the fuel system to make sure it is air tight. The senor got a false signal stating the system was leaking but it was the pump.

Check engine light came on this morning, mazda 3 09', it has 14,500 miles, i just got an oil change at the dealership a few days ago, also i think the gas cap was a little bit loose i noticed the last time...

I would take it back to the dealer and tell them the check engine light came on not long after oil change. Have them run the code on their's a reasonable request!

A loose gas cap will defintely trigger the engine light, but in most cases, it will reset itself within one week. Some cars don't have a reset which forces you to have a mechanic reset it for you.

Check engine light on at 90500 miles 2003 toyota camry is this just a reminder light for scheduled maint.?

Your check engine light usually means there is an issue with your emissions control system. The last time mine came on, I found that my gas cap wasn't on tight enough. I turned it on tightly and the light went off after 30 miles or so. Start there.
If you've tightened the cap and the light is still on after 30 miles, you may have a bad gas cap OR maybe you just got some bad gas at your last fill-up. Try a few gallons of high-test and drive it a while. If nothing changes, a new gas cap is probably the next cheapest option. Good luck.
