on this e24 engine. 2.4Liter
if NISSAN can not tell you this.
try -5degrees before top dead center,(TDC) and then later advance it to the ping point of you fuel. (low or high octane)

What problem are you having with them? On most engines the Camshafts, (Cams), are located at the highest point on the engine running parallel to the cylinders. Yours is fitted with a V6 engine so it will have two sets of Cams. If you look on the top of the engine where the Oil filler cap is fitted the Cams are directly below it. A 'V' engine will have a matching set on the opposite side. The Cams are inside the top of the engine where you can't see them and require a lot of work to get to them. If you need work done on them you will be better getting a mechanic to do it.

Hi Richard. I'm Tim Dorton. Make sur the engine is at TDC #1 cylinder on the compression stroke. Crank over by hand with spark plus out, thumb over #1 cylinder hole, feel compression. With a special tool called a feeler gauge remove the valve covers and one by one bring the cylinders up to top dead center (both valves are fully closed at this point) adjust to factory spec. All adjustments are done cold. If engine is very high miles reduce the clearances in specs by slight amount (.002") to the tight side to account for wear in the valve train parts.

If there is a problem with the engine the black box in the car is telling the engine to run at a safe setting to prevent damaging the engine. This allows you to limp into a repair station to get it fixed.

place the timing mark on the crank pulley at the correct ignition timing mark (10 degrees advanced). Place in the distributor so that the rotor button points to no1 cylinder in the cap. when fitted in properly turn the distributor so that the points are just opening. ( you can get this by turning on the ignition and when you see the points spark or hear a spark click then lock the distributor up at that point . Use a timing light for final set. If it wont start you got it on 180 degrees out then just move the HT wires around 180 degrees. If you have a transistorized ignition then when the point of the cam star is directly opposite the magnet point that is the same as the points.

Through an engineers point of view, it can be done but it will involve a lot of cash and engineering to a point that it will be very impractical. However, there are some parts that you can, more practically, import from an SR20 to stock Nissan sentra engines (EFI GA or QG series) like the air intake and turbo but it will, of course, involve a lot of technical expertise.

The best and most practical thing to do to make your stock engine faster is just to purchase or salvage performance parts from the same engine series or are intended for your engine and do a lot of fine tuning with them.

It sounds like either a fuel restriction or clogged CAT. What have you run for tests so far. Were any repairs or maintenance performed prior to this issue.
