Depends what make and model you mean, but if a power steering rack, good repair is beyond most DIY because it takes special tools, and these steering boxes can be quite difficult to take out.

Most faulty units would be repaired by replacement, with a remanufactured one.

1996 Nissan maxima steering gear

Yes, but it is usually cheaper and better to buy a remanufactured steering rack. Remember to get the car realigned after replacing the rack. Also top off the lost power steering fluid.

Does a 1997 grand gt 3.1 liter have rack & pinion steering? I'm told the power steering went out and I don't know if it might be the pump or what.

Your car does have rack and pinion steering. If all of the fluid leaked out somewhere and you continued to drive, you probably have 2 problems to repair:

1. What ever started leaking (return hose, rack, pressure hose, or could just be the pump itself)
2. Power steering pump was damaged from lack of lubrication (fluid)

Steering gear boot seepage.

the sterring rack (this is the long rack) must be replaced to correct this leak, the internal seal bore is most likely scored.

If power steering pump is replaced, is it possible to damage the steering rack during the replacement of the pump?

NO. The rack usually fails because no one changes P/S Fluid every two years or so. Now if a new rack is installed and you don't flush the cooler and install a filter in the return line, you loose the new rack again from contamination from the first rack. That's a common poor work practice, even though every rack comes with a tag and instructions warning of this.

Steering rack

its possible that the mounting bushings for the rack are bad have the mechanic show you the mounts and look if they are wore out you can tell they wont look like they fit the car. the tierods warranty should have been extended when they were replaced. check with the dealer with a reminder that they were replaced.also check for recalls on your car on the internet. that might answer your problems
