You may need to shim the starter.
The rebuilds are not very accurate in the pinion placement locations when the nose bushings are replaced. You should have those in the starter box or the local parts store will have some.
Be sure that the engine that is in the vehicle is the one you think it is.
There may be different pinion gears for a different model. Hondas do that.
11 tooth,12 tooth,etc.
Is it 4WD?

SOURCE: Flywheel area, possibly transmission

the noise might be from a loose bendix on the starter,
the bendix is a little gear in fron of the starter see if there is any visual point to see it nad make sure it keeps away from the flywheel if not have the starter repalced, this bendix have a spring to keep it away from the flywheel also with a flash ligh try to see the closes you can to the center of flywheel sometimes they get crack where they atached to the engine,
and on the shifting might be a bad transmission or the shifter has to be inspected for your mechanic

SOURCE: Changing a cap and rotor on 2001 Chevy Astro

pull off the center console inside the van to expose the engine. the distributor will be right in front of you. remove 2 screws from the cap, and make sure you get the wires on in the exact order you remove them, or else it wont start. rotor is underneath cap, and i believe the coil is right there on the cap.

You may be in the group who had a bad starter cable. My 1999 had problems with the primary starter cable that runs under the vehicle. Its over $100 and like wrestling with a python to get it out.
If you noticed lights dimming or heard the radio crackling, the body grounds may corroded.

There are shims that go between the starter and the block. If it grinds because it is too tight in the flywheel you need to add a shim.

How do I stop the grinding when starting 2000 Astro Van

Hello Anonymous...

To inspect the teeth on the ring gear requires the inspection to check the full 360 degrees of the ring gear. Looking past the inspection cover to examine a small portion of the ring gear may reveal no issues, but only for that section. Eventually the ring gear will end up positioned above the starter drive gear which will skip across the bad teeth creating your grinding noise when you try and start the Astro,.

Starter motor grinding

This sounds like you will need to remove the starter to be sure...this grinding is usually caused by the spring loaded armature not releasing to retract into the starter after starting...this grinding means the starter is not disengaging from the flywheel...sometimes installing shims to shorten the engagement length works, but on your late model Toyota, this would be unusual...probably will need to replace the starter. Continued driving could cause serious damage to the flywheel, a costly repair...don't wait to repair or replace...the engine and transmission need to be seperated to replace a damaged flywheel. Try the starter first. Hope this helps. You share a famous name with "Harry Morgan" of the MASH TV series:)

I have a 1996 astro van...when i go to start and turn ignition it makes this real bad grinding sound? could it be the flywheel or the starter ?

It could be either the flywheel or the starter.
If it's grinding, don't try it again until you've removed and examined the starter and flywheel. If the starter solenoid isn't fully engaging the bendix, it will cause the gear to grind; replace or rebuild the starter if that's the case.
But you should examine the flywheel to see if it is seriously damaged from the problems you've had. Put a mark on the flywheel using a magic marker, then examine the flywheel as you slowly turn the engine by hand. (make certain that the ignition is off when you do that, you don't want anything bad to happen to your hand.) The mark on the flywheel will indicate when you've been able to examine the all of the teeth on the starter ring.

My 2004 Chevy Trailblazer is making a bizaar noise when I start it up. It's starts as a high pitch squeal then drops to a lower pitch squeal then ends in kind of a grind. Thought it was a slipping belt but...

Hi Eabyrd05.
It's possible that you have a Starter or Flywheel/Flex-plate issue. Your starter Bendix may not be completely disengaging from the flywheel like it should. I would take it to a mechanic that you trust and have them pull the starter and look at both the Flywheel/Flex-plate, Starter Bendix and solenoid. Hope this helps.

Good indication of a bad starter. Is it just clicking or is it a grinding ugly noise?. The second is definately the starter.
