Check the air filter. If it's dirty/black replace it. Clean the throttle body and idle air control motor. Use brake clean and clean inside it as best you can. Use a tooth brush.

Check and clean Idle air control valve. Make sure its responding to signal as well. Also make sure ther are no vacuum hoses disconnected. This may not be a "cure" but it's a good place to start.

SOURCE: 2001 dodge dakota will not start
Sounds like a bad battery, or bad/loose connection there. After the battery is replaced, or disconnected, it will need a little bit to relearn how to idle.
