When you manually select a gear then the transmission will stay in that gear as this is what it is designed to do ( crawling over rough terrain -going down steep grades will not change gears and loose traction control) If it is not changing properly in auto mode then run the fault codes to check for faulty sensors.

Depends on if you have push button or stick lever. There should be a button and dash if push button and a lever in the console area that will get you back in 2wd

I was towing a heavy load with my 94 4runner. i put it in 4wd, heard a strange moan sound, very quickly took it out of 4wd. now i have no reverse

Not sure if the 4runner requires you to stop before engaging 4wd or not. Need some more information on your vehicle, auto/manual, speed when you engaged 4wd.

4WD LO will not disengage what can cause this.

@ 2000 gmc: Exactly right.

asker: Also, it helps if you're rolling at about 2 mph with the steering wheels straight.
You cannot shift into 4LO with the wheels turned or when in a drive
gear. Also, it may be that you need the electric shift unit serviced.
It is not recommended to drive on dry pavement while in 4LO.

Slips out of gear when in 4WD

Check the oil level in the shift on the fly (sotf) part of the axle thats the left of the front one - it holds about 1 pint of gear oil and gets missed at service time .
