Is the check engine light coming on, in your dash? If so you will have to find someone with a scanner to pull up the code or codes. From what you are describing I think you have a bad crankshaft sensor. GOOD LUCK FRIEND.

Testimonial: "no check engine light... after cleaning every ground we could find we got it too try to run but not long it has a snowplow on it and i found a busted headlight the socket/plug just hanging there so <shrug>"

James, I appoligise for the answer I gave you . I was thinking of a newer vehicle ad went way off the mark. You have a distributer in this truck, check inside and around. Bad cap (cracked, broken), bad rotor ( cracked , broken), bad condensor, or wiring, bad spark plug wire bad plugs (cracked porcilin, broken in half. Check wires at fr breaks, or chewed due to mice.If your truck sat for a while out sidtthese things can happen. The broken headlight you metioned is a sign of vandalizm. The truck if able to start and run, would do it even with a broken headlight. Please get back to me and let me know if you succeed in getting your truck started.

The fuel sender in tank is faulty. It is in your gas tank. Common chevrolet problem.

SOURCE: gas guage not reading accurate

Your sending unit inside of the fuel tank is probably faulty. Unfortunately you have to drop the tank to change it.

SOURCE: starts and stalls immediatly

This is a somewhat common problem, usually occurs also with ""steering lock fault". It appears to be a software/hardware issue. See VW dealer.
Can be worked around by: inserting key to first stop>wait for yellow steering wheel light to go out>insert key to second stop>wait for red steering wheel light to go out>start er up. This somehow works around the software issue.

My 1988 chevy 2500 has been so reliable until it stated to stall.

Could be. But more then likely it's the gas. The gas you get these days from the pumps will gunk up after around 30-40 days. I'ld change the fuel filter see if that works. If not you might have to take the tank out to clean off the pickup sock. It's a small filter type on the end of the fuel pump. Of course, you should do a pressure test to see first.

Sounds like fuel pump related. Check the pump pressure when the car is warm, also replace the fuel filter.
