Timing belts shpuld be changed at around every 60000, chains would need to be replaced if they are streched out an dmake noise or rattling..

You really cannot mis it. It is at the front of the engine, top center. Black can-shaped housing. Unscrew the top of the housing and replace the paper element inside.

SOURCE: Need a Belt Diagram for 2001 BMW 325ci

Whether you plan on DIY maintenance or not, I suggest you invest in a service manual for your car. When available, I like the Haynes manuals better than Chilton.

We have one with each vehicle and if you don't decide to do something yourself, it still serves as a guide so you can see if a quoted labor cost is justified or not.
It's a one-time cost that will pay itself back each time you refer to it:

2001 325ci battery light came on, power steering not working.

Check under the hood to see if you have a broken belt. The belt that runs the alternator probably runs the power steering. This is why both problems occurred at the same time. If you or someone replace the belt, you should be OK soon. GOOD LUCK.

It has a timing CHAIN, not a belt. ALL BMWs have timing chains, unless it is an OLDER BMW, which only then might have a belt-driven timing.
