Sometimes you have to manually pump the fuel around the system. If it did this since new, then it is not a fuel injected car. The thing is, I have never heard of a car newer than 1974 that needed to do this. Could it be a strange once off?

Chrysler vehicles are infamous for losing there idle learn when battery voltage drops below a curtain range. And then has to be re learned by feathering the throttle. I would get the battery tested...or just replace it now that we're coming into winter.
It is possible you have a different problem such as an IAC (idle air control) or a MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure sensor) But from experience I would start with a battery.

Jeep liberty will not stay cranked

if it starts and immediately stalls than try stepping on the gas as soon as it starts. If you can keep it running with your foot on the gas pedal than replace the idle control motor. It is located on the back side of the throttle body on the drivers side. it should have a flat four wire connector and be held in place by two screw.

2004 JEEP LIBERTY DIESEL ENG - BRAKE SYSTEM PROBLEM

diesels do not have conventional vacuum operated brake boosters. i am not sure what chrysler calls there system, but i believe it is similar to the gm hydroboost system, in which case pressure is created by a pump integral to the power steering pump gives you your assist, and fed to an accumulator on the fluid booster near the master. be very careful when tinkering when these systems, as they can have very high pressures in them even when the car is not running. are you experiencing any steering issues at the same time? check your fluid levels (PS fluid will effect operation) and all the associated hoses and lines, go from there. good luck!

if your pumping the gas pedal, your only giving it more air not fuel, the injectors are doing the fuel, what is the temperature there when this happened and was this a cold start or a warm engine start.

Is it a bad battery or alternator

It's more likely to be the fuel pump or filter than the battery or alternator.

if the car starts then there shouldn't be anything wrong with your fuel pump. fuel pumps either work or they don't. it sounds like you may be having a problem with your mass air flow sensor you can try cleaning it with an approved aerosol spray or it may need to be replaced. hope this helps.
