Check that you have installed the gear lever in the shift rail when you refitted the lever tower on top of the box

would the neutral safety switch keep it from shifting out of low range?

  • Bill Boyd Nov 08, 2014

If the neutral safety switch was at fault the engine would not start. While the gear lever only goes in one way, if the selector rail for first gear is at the ingear position then when fitting the lever it is possible to put it at the end of the rail and not in the slot. Ensure that all the slots are in line before fitting the lever back in.. If there is still a problem it may be necessary for you to give a step by step process of what you did including any problems you encountered in the reassembly process.

SOURCE: 1988 ford ranger 4x4. Push button for on the fly

That would be the actulator on the transfer case. More than likely it needs replaced. Check for good connection at the plug on the tranfer case.

It could be a simple fix, have you taken care
of this trans? Changing filter an fluid as
directed? That would be my first steP.
my second step would be to check the vacce
lines on trans an change the modulator
valve. Get back with me

Will a 1988 Ford F 250 4 wheel drive drag link and tie rod ends fit on a 1988 Ford bronco 4 wheel drive? If so is the F 250 drag link and tie rods stronger or beefier than the stock bronco drag link and...

In general, the Ford Bronco running gear is identical to an F150 4X4 running gear for the same year. The only difference is the length of the rear drive shaft. I doubt the F250 gear will fit, since typically the F150 running gear is made by ford, and the F250 running gear comes from commercially available parts (Dana, etc).

My brother has a 94 Bronco, we had the same problem upon installation of the new transfer case motor. In our case, all we did was liberally coat all moving parts of the transfer case motor with grease.

My 4x4 is stuck in four wheel low it is shift on the fly and i have already replaced the transfer case motor

Ok here is a long shot but sometimes it will work. Put the 4wd position switch to 4wd Lo, put your transmission in reverse and back up for about 50 yards, stop and put your transmission in neutral, then shift the 4wd to 4wd hi, wait a few seconds and shift the 4wd to 2wd hi, Sometimes the t-case will get stuck and this is how you reset the computer. I have known people that really got their t-cases messed up because they thought that shift on the go meant that they could shift the t-case into 4wd LO while moving but shift on the go is only for 4wd hi the gears will not mesh up fast enough for 4wd LO because the ratio is 1 to 1 . I hope this helps you.

1988 ford bronco full size 4x4 works fine but is making a clicking noise on the left driver side is the differential going out??

The clicking is most likley the universal joint in the axel shaft. Using jackstands jack up that side of the Bronco with the wheels cut to the side that will make it click and spin the wheel by hand to see if the noise is coming from just behind the wheel. If it is teh universal joint is bad.

is the idle speed correct? do you shift into second before trying to engage reverse?, is the clutch ok, this is most likely not the trans at all but one of the above issues, the clutch is my guess.

You need to pull the tranny out.
Then the flywheel needs to be unbolted from the engine.
if it's an automatic, purchase a new flywheel, if its a clutch, you can have a new ring gear pressed on to the flywheel...
