Question about 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe
Most likely a cv joint in the front axles if not the 4wd could be stuck on and you could have internal damage in the differential making the noise

quick way to tell... next time it won't crank and just clicks... hit it gently with a hammer as you have someone attempt to start it... if all of a sudden it cranks.... it's the starter... replace it before it quites completely.

If it's a 4WD then your front universal joint(s) on the front wheel drive shafts are on the way out and should be replaced. They should be replaced as a pair (both sides) so that you have uniform wear, but you can replace the bad one to solve the problem. The noise should be coming from one side or the other, indicating which one is going bad, but it's most likely the right sive CV joint. Also, it the rubber boot on the end of the driveshaft is damaged or torn, that would point to the offending joint. Your parts store should be able to sell you a reconditioned half shaft to fix the problem. Replacement can be done at home with decent tools.

There is a vacum powered actuator on the front differential housing on the passenger side. It pushes one way for 2WD and the other way for 4WD. If it gets an erratic vacum signal it can cause the clicking as it goes between 2WD and 4WD. It gets it's vacum from two valves mounted on the firewall just behind the battery(to left). The white line feeds manifold vacum to the valves. Check for vacum at white line with engine running. If no vacum there is a break in line from manifold (not likely in this case). If vacum check the pink and blue lines by applying vacum to each one. The vacum should hold. If not check lines from valves to vacum actuator. If both lines hold vacum check valves. Remove electrical connectors from both valves. Connect a wire from one of the terminals of the valve to ground. Touch a wire from the battery + to the other terminal of the valve. Listen for a clicking sound. If no sound valve is bad. Replace valves(s). Also have someone watch position of actuator shaft as you move the selector between 2WD and 4WD. There should be movement. If there is an intermittent problem sometimes it will and other times it won't.

On the full size, the front actuator is electric, not vacuum.
When in 4wd mode, a switch on top of the transfer case conducts 12 volts out to the actuator. Wire #50 (brown) is the 12v feed, and it conducts to the light blue wire (#900) to the actuator.
When shifted out of 4wd, the switch opens up and no voltage goes to the actuator.
Check voltage at the connector for the front actuator (at the front differential - it looks like a large bullet that threads into the front diff.) If it has 12 volts, the actuator is the problem. If it does not have 12 volts, check the transfer case switch and the power feed to the transfer case.
I'll assume it is the actuator, if the plug to the actuator is getting 12 volts when in 4wd.
The way this actuator works, is it is a sealed chamber that gets heated by voltage. When it heats, the pin in the end swells and pushes a shift fork in the front differential. The shift fork engages a spline on the passenger side of the differential, and boom! you have 4WD.
GM offered an upgrade to this actuator that is a motor instead of a heated device. However, it requires a small harness addition, a spacer, and a new actuator. It is about a $150 to $200 option.
Good luck. The actuator is usually the problem 90% of time but recheck all of the wire harness just to maker sure there is no short before replacing any parts. The actuator may not be fully engaged or disengaged and the fork to the spline may be what is causing the grinding.

If the grinding is only when you apply the brakes, then it's going to be replacing the break pads and rotors and may be the brake caliper if it's damaged from the worn out brake pads. Please keep me posted, be glad to know you got your Tahoe running 100%
