How do I replace the parking pawl on my 1998 sebring

My car rolls in park. I've been told to replace the transmission, and then I was told it was the parking pawl. does this mean the transmission is going bad? The parking brake doesn't hold it in park either (needs to be replaced)

The Parking Pawl is internal of the Transmission and the Transmission must be removed to do this repair. Someone put the car into PARK when it was not at a COMPLETE STOP.

The Parking Brake can be adjusted or you can have the REAR BRAKES redone and have them properly adjust the Parking Brakes.

Your linkage must be out of adjustment......or a bad tranny.

SOURCE: parking brake on my 01 kia rio(standard) no longer holds

You may want to revisit those rear brakes to make sure the parking brake linkage is hooked up properly. There is usually a spring that needs to go over the parking brake linkage and make sure the cross bar is facing the right direction and holds both the shoes and the parking brake linkage.

You need to remove the trans pan to inspect the parking pawl and rod. Hopefully you can adjust or repair with trans in your vehicle.

Also don't assume your cable etc is okey. You don't know that. You may be able to adjust it and be okey.

Will it hurt your car if someone pushes it with it in park

There is a pawl in the transmission that lock the driveling so that it wont roll on automatic transmissions. The pawl is not made to take a lot of force. IT could be damaged now and you would have to get a transmission shop to replace that. It is a big job because it means remove the transmission to get to it. The problem is not so bad if you have a manual transmission.

How do I tighten an automatic transmission in a 2002 3.85 Imala?

this is normal as there is clearance built into the parking pawl in the transmission to make it easier to go from park to a gear. I`m guessing this happens when you put the car in park on a slight incline. if you walk up to any car and push against it when its in park it will roll slightly until the clearance is taken up in the parking pawl, this is the clearance that you have.

Why does my 2005 envoy roll away with it in park and key turned off

Inside the transmission there is a mechanical device called a parking pawl. When the transmission is put in to park this L shaped chunk of metal locks the output shaft from turning. This Pawl can break and become useless in stopping the vehicle from moving without the park brake on. What all this means is the pawl inside your transmission has stopped working. The part needs to be replaced to restore its operation.

Car will roll while off and in gear

I am assuming this is an automatic transmission? It is possible your shifter cable or linkage got knocked out of adjustment but most likely the "Park "pawl has either come loose or is broken. It is a lever with a hook like shape that engages into a slotted ring at the output of the transmission.

Heavy duty trucks with Allison automatic transmissions do not have Park on the shifter because the "park pawl" couldn't handle the stress from the heavy loads twisting the driveshaft. Always set your park brake, even on level ground on all cars & trucks with automatic transmissions.

I hope it is just a shifter adjustment otherwise the transmission will have to be removed, disassembled, park pawl replaced.

Fusion rolls in park

Only one thing can cause this, the pin that locks the transmission when shifted to park position is broken/sheared off, the bottom pan of the transmission must be removed and the broken park pin (referred to as the Park Pawl pin) replaced

Truck rolls backward in park..runs and shifts fine just no true park

sounds like the parking pinn or [pawl] Inspect the parking pawl as it is likely broken. The pawl is a metal pin that engages the transmission's gear when the transmission is in the "Park" position. The pawl manually locks the transmission's gears and is located on the interior side of the transmission's manual control linkage

Parking pawl inside the transmission is sheared off. Drop the pan, and replace the pawl with a dealership piece.
