What is the code 171 mean on my dodge ram 1500

P0171 Chrysler - Fuel System Lean

Possible causes
- Intake air leaks
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection

Tech notes
If the P0171 is combined with the P0174 code, it's very likely that the problem is caused by an intake leak. If there are no intake leaks, the next step is to replaced the air filter and clean the air flow meter. If the problem persist the front oxygen (O2) sensor may need to be replaced.

When is the code detected?
- Fuel injection system does not operate properly.
- The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too small. (The mixture ratio is too lean.)

Possible symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Excessive Fuel Consumption

P0171 Chrysler Description
With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The Engine Control Module (ECM) calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.

In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (2 trip detection logic).

What is code p017.2 for a 2002 dodge caravan

This is the closest I've come to the code you are looking for. I searched all Dodge codes and didn't see any with a "point 2" but I found code P0172. According to EngineCodes.com your fuel mixture is probably too rich. This is what the site had to say:

Possible Causes for this Code:
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor

This code is detected when:
- Fuel injection system does not operate properly.
- The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too large. (The mixture ratio is too rich.)

P0172 Dodge Code Description:

O2 sensor

O2 sensor monitors the air fuel ratio consistently. It makes sure that the engine receives optimum fuel mixture all the time. If the mixture will be rich, i.e. more fuel and less air, it will signal the ECU to reduce the fuel supply and if the mixture will be lean, the fuel supply will be increased.

Code 0171

Here is the definition.
Causes could be a faulty O2 sensor or a fuel problem.

I have a code reader and the code is P0171 P0174 System too lean. what makes the system too lean?

P0171 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 1
Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

P0174 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2
Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

What Causes These Codes: Fuel injection system does not operate properly. The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too large. (The mixture ratio is too rich.) The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the engine Air/Fuel mixture ratio, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The PCM calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios. In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the PCM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the engine light. The codes is usually set when there is an intake leak after the air flow meter, before replacing any parts check for loose or broken hoses and intake gasket leak. On Ford some models dirty air filter, and dirty or faulty air flow sensor are the cause of the problem.

I have a 1987 gmc jimmy with a 5.7 litre fuel injection and it seems to be lack air or has to much i dnt know . and i want to know how to adjust my fuel air mixture

Unfortunately, most fuel injection engines don't have an adjustable fuel/air mixture by the technician.

The fuel/air mixture is controlled by a computer.

Diagnostic warning light.....diagnostic done at kia dealer... no obvious but told it might be mixture problem as they had seen same before. Any ideas?

Hi.

Mixture problems can be caused by a number of factors and faults. A computer module, the PCM, determines the mixture using data from different sensors. Re-circulated gas is also used to determine the mixture.

If the problem only happened at cold, then check the MAF (mass air flow) and (IAT intake air temperature) sensor, and also have the vacuum system tested for leaks, hat can affect the mixture and make a difference, particularly when idling.

If the problem reported by the error code was mixture related, then a common cause is often the EGR valve, that regulates gas re-circulation. In this case the engine will be running rough at idle and when driving.

More problems that can return mixture related codes can concern:
Fuel injector problems (voltage , leaking injector, dirty injector). In that case more codes may be returned. Excessive or insufficient fuel pressure due to fuel lines, pump problem, or bad fuel pressure regulator. Gas recovery system, vacuum leaks and EGR valve. Air leaks from air intake mainfold (after sensor), or defective MAF, IAT. If sensors are faulty, then you will get more codes. If the car recently runt out of fuel, or if the fuel cap is defective you can also get an error related to mixture. Exhaust leaks before reaching the O2 sensors. Timing problem.

If the only problem was a mixture related problem, then wait to see if the code comes back. The engine warning light will turn on. In that case check for additional codes and report the code here.

Things are different if there are more codes. Also there are differences if the mixture is too rich or poor.

Regards.
