Question about 1998 Ford Mustang

1 Answer

I have a 1998 Mustang Convertible that needs a new front brake proportioning valve. I can not find one for the front but when called Ford Dealer they said it would be $800.00 I do not believe that. The rear ones are $48.00. Quite a big difference. Is that correct? Any ideas where I could find one? Already checked websites ie: Ebay, etc...

The front valve is not only a proportional valve, it is the entire ABS modulator and yes it is that expensive.

I removed my abs system on my 95 gt mustang and now no brakes

You can not remove the ABS hydraulic control module from cars that come with it. Cars without ABS have a device called a proportioning valve. This valve is designed to supply 70% of the stopping power to the front brakes and the remaining 30% to the rear. Without this valve, the rear brakes would constantly be locking up. On cars with ABS, that valve is built into the ABS unit. Your only other option is to obtain and install the master cylinder and proportioning valve from the version of your car that came without ABS. FYI, some cars come with ABS as standard equipment, so there would be no variant without ABS. It's to late for your current ABS unit, however you need to know that you are supposed to flush your brake fluid every two years. Failure to do this causes a build up of moisture in the fluid. Automotive brake fluids absorb moisture from the air. The system is not totally sealed. The cap on the fluid reservoir has a tiny vent hole in it, needed for the fluid to flow into and out of the master cylinder. This is how the moisture gets absorbed. This moisture corrodes the inside of all the hydraulic parts of the system. Brake fluid when new is either clear or the color of ginger ale [pale yellow] as it ages, it darkens. After two years, it starts to turn brown. It will be totally black after 4 to 5 years. Failure to flush the fluid every two years damages your brake's hydraulic system components. Flush the fluid every two years and NONE of the hydraulic components will go bad.

Brake proportioning valve

H Colin, The brake proportioning valve adjust the amount of effort required for maximum efficiency with different loads in the vehicle. The brakes in most vehicles are proportioned for approximately 60% front brakes and forty percent rear. The valve makes small adjustments to braking between front and rear. Regards john

I need to know if a brake line Junction Block is the same as a proportioning valve?

no a brake line junction block will give all of the brakes equal pressure and wear the back brakes out faster then the front if your car is not made for it a proportioning valve monitors the pressure on each brake and distributes it accordingly

1968 ford mustang brake line diagram

It's pretty simple. The front line from the mastercylinder should go into a tee, then from the tee to each front wheel. The rear the same way. No proportioning valve is needed with 4-wheel discs.

I have 66 mustang 4 lug front spindles, was wondering if a 70 cougar spindles 5 lug would bolt in or do i need the granada swap?

I think they will work.
If they wont its only because of the ball joint pin size is different.
What I mean by the balljoint pin, is the tapered pin that has the threaded tip for the nut.
The way to check is to measure the pin size and compare them to the ones you have.
If they are not the same it may be possible to find balljoints with the proper size pin that will fit the mustang control and A arms. (somtimes a pain in ****).
With that all said, the other part of the conversion, Im sure you know,is the master cylinder and the proportioning valve for disk brakes.
you can also use a manual adjustable proportioning valve if you did not want to use one made for disk brakes.
