In most cases the fuel level sending unit
in the fuel tank

Lot of work to replace & can be expensive if it is
part of the fuel pump assy

On an old vehicle, you could have a poor ground
from dirt & corrosion, again hard to get to the top
of a fuel tank

Like all folks that come here, you have no vehicle or anything
about any research you have done

The wire going to the fuel sender in the tank has developed a short to ground. Somewhere the wire is pinched.

SOURCE: My 1999 Oldsmobile Alero Gas gauge and fuel system

well # 1 the full gauge when empty is a sign that your fuel pump is bad and that needs to be replaced the part about spitting the gas back out is probrobly a clog between the fuel door and the tank itself or their might be a vapor lock door that might be stuck shut so fuel cant get in im not 100%sure about that but im 100%sure that the fuel guage is the fuel pump being dead.

SOURCE: when trying to put gas in my car, the gas kicks back like it's full but it is not full i don't understand why we can't put fuel in the tank

Your car has a EPA mandated fuel vapor recovery system as part of the fuel tank filler device, this is malfunctioning and is blocking air from being vented while filling which causes the fuel to kick off. You must see the dealer to have this diagnosed. This may be covered under an extended warranty for emission system components.

Used the wrong gas

Open the gas fill door, remove the gas cap and smell the gas fill tube area. If it has a kerosene like smell then you may have filled it with diesel fuel. If so select your favorite garage to drain the tank and flush the fuel system to remove the diesel.
This vehicle should run on any type of gasoline so I suspect the fluid you put in was not gasoline.

The gas gauge keeps moving back and forth what could be wrong

Fault in the vaiable potentiometer fitted in the tank for the sensing the level of the fuel. This can be worned out over a period of time and loses contact at some points.
So open check or replace.

My 95 intrepid is really hard on fuel

temp sensors, lambda/oxygen sensor/ reading wrong temp - they would both increasse fuel consumption - have the diagnostics checked at garage.
Air filter, it it clogged or really dirty?
Tyre pressures - make sure they are upto reccomended pressure, (extra pressure reduces rolling resistance and increases fuel economy but at the cost of grip...)
Binding brakes?
Fuel Leak?

Leave feedback good or bad

2005 Nissan Xterra gas gauge reads empty when full of gas.

Sending unit died. can be expencive to replace since most sending units are integral with the fuel pump now. lots of labor too. Better to use the trip odometer till you can afford a day without your car and a $600.00 +labor repair bill.
