How much "over full"?
(Realize that the fluid level will be slightly higher when the trans and fluid is hot, and lower after when the vehicle has not been running and cold).
If it is only 1/4" (~10mm) overfull, that could account for just normal fluid temperature expansion. Anything greater than that may indicate the following problem.

That said, if the fluid level is significantly higher than normal, there is only one place that can leak "fluid" into the transmission. That would be the rare case where there is a hole in the transmission cooling line which usually connects into the radiator for the engine coolant to cool the transmission fluid passing thru the trans cooling line.
If a hole/crack developed in the trans cooling line inside that location, antifreeze/coolant could leak into the trans line.

Is the trans fluid on the trans dipstick normal colored, or does it appear to be milky with water/coolant intrusion?

2 quarts over for the first time 1 quart over for the second time and no there is no water or anything in the transmission fluid

  • Mike Acco Oct 31, 2014

If it's known the trans was at the "full line" (measured when hot) before the 1st detected overfill situation, that's puzzling and a concern. The 1 quart rise is "iffy" since that is borderline between normal temp expansion and levelness. This problem is reminiscent of when I had a vehcle run off the road into a ditch. I began the trip with 1/4 tank of gas. After pulling out of the ditch, 1 mile down the road I saw I had 3/4 tank of gas. I found the bottom of the gas tank had been severely dented, thus making for less volume and higher gas level. Rare case, but I assume your trans pan is undamaged.

Where exactly is the shifter solenoid on my 1996 ford ranger v-6

You have an automatic transmission. ? If so , it's inside the transmission, the transmission has a fluid pan on the bottom .That has to be unbolted and watch out trans fluid is going to pour out all over ! Do you have a shift problem ? eng. light on , code stored in the computer ?

Sir, i have a 1991 ford pickup ranger. Is it hard to put transmission fluid into this pickup doing it myself. What do i need and what kind of fluid do I need. Mrs Jenkins. [email protected]

if this is an automatic transmission you just put the fluid down the dipstick tube you will need a transmission funal to do this and the fluid is Dextron II.

if this truck has a manual transmission you will need to jack the truck up and put on jack stands and go under truck and on the right side of the transmission you will see a check plug that has a square head remove the plug and fill with 80w-90 gear lube till it starts coming out the check hole.

Why does my 1987 Ford Ranger not shift after 35 mph? Is my transmission going out? Help Please. I need to go see my dad in the hospital.

check and see if there's enough fluid. Automatic transmissions shift based on fluid pressure. If there is not enough fluid, not enough pressure builds up and there is no shift. Be careful to follow the manufacture recommended method for checking the fluid in your transmission as procedures vary from transmission to transmission and overfilling can cause catastrophic failure.

How do i add transmission fluid into a 1993 Ford Ranger?

Automatic Transmission?

The fluid level needs to be checked with the engine running, the vehicle on a level surface, and the transmission in park. Remove the Transmission dipstick, wipe clean, and reinsert. Immediately pull it out again and check the fluid level. If it is not where it should be fluid can be added through the dipstick tube. A half a quart can make a big difference in fluid level so start small.

It will take a while for the new fluid to clear out of the tube to get an accurate reading after you add the new fluid.

Does the 3.0l transmission fit on the 4.0l engine

Hiya,

There are 5 automatic transmissions used in the Ford Ranger, Explorer and Mountaineer. They may be identified by checking the transmission code on the Safety Standard Certification Label attached to the driver's side door post, in the space marked Trans. The transmissions can also be identified by a tag attached to the lower left hand extension attaching bolt. The transmission codes are as follows:
  • 1991–94 code T is for the A4LD transmission
  • 1995–99 code T is for the 4R44E (2.3L, 2.5L & 3.0L) or 4R55E (4.0L) transmission
  • 1996–99 code U is for the 4R70W (5.0L) transmission
  • 1997–99 code D is for the 5R55E (5-speed automatic) transmission
So, what you need to do now is...establish from a FORD workshop, whether both the A4LD and 4R55E transmissions share the same components and mounting dimensions.

Cheers,

Scott

I have a 1996 Ford Ranger extended cab with automatic transmission. In drive the transmission slips. It just started to do this after a replaced gas tank. I checked the fluid and it is at correct level....

Run and obd2 scan at autozone or advance. this is free. This will let you know if any sensors are bad and it will give you a course of action. It could be your input or output speed sensor or your ECM or TCM. Exhaust these options before pinpointin the transmission as the problem Its also possible when they replaced the gas tank they dislodged a ground connection. Good Luck
