I had the same problem with mine and noticed that its not the oil,its actually the automatic gearbox fluid(red), its more than likely leaking as the injector(small metal fitting at end of tube) below the filter(big black long tube like thing that clicks over air filter) has a crack in and causes small leaks, the fluids not totally getting into the engine so it misses a gear or goes to neutral at the oddest of times(especially when you stop) new tube doesnt cost too much labour on the other hand does....

havent had a problem since

Only get 1, 2nd and reverse on my Alfa 156 selespeed 2000. Other gears i don't get. The selespeed light flash on the dash and gear indicator also flashing. What can cause this?

It may have a problem in the electronics that shift the transmission, have a fault code test run on the Transmission control module (TCM)

Alfa's have a Nylon ball with the gear selector (under the gearbox). They wear pretty easily. This could be pretty worn, either that or you're running low on gearbox, or "selespeed" oil. Check them out. They're pretty important and can cause serious problems to the gear box if not looked after.

Selespeed failure code

First try to replace the gearbox oil and do transmission flush (cheapest solution). This is how to do it

Selespeed gearbox

Check that you have oil in the gearbox and that the drive shfts are securely fitted in the box. If all this is ok, then a reconditiond, second hand or new replacement box is the order of the day. Before you buy another box, when the box is off the engine, dismantle the clutch and inspect it. It may be the preasure plate is breaking up. Anyway it is only another ten minutes on the job. If you find wear in the clutch, repace it at the same time as you change the box. Sorry for the bad news.
