I'm trying to find the starter in a Dodge Caravan.

My starter is going bad. If it's easy to get to I can replace it, but I'm having trouble identifying the starter.

Your best bet is to get a Haynes repair manual for that
car. There are step by step instructions for the removal
of the starter.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, JACK UP AND SUPPORT YOUR CARAVAN. LYING ON YOUR BACK LOCATE THE STARTER WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE THROUGH THE BELL HOUSING .THERE ARE TWO 15 MILIMETER BOLTS THAT HOLDS THE STARTER ON . AFTER BREAKING THE BOLTS A 15MM WRENCH WOULD BE USEFUL.

SOURCE: Need install instruction for starter on 2002 Dodge Caravan

This is alittle tricky getting to some of the bolts but its not too hard to do otherwise. 2 bolts hold on the starter IIRC they are 13mm bolts. make sure your battery is dissconected by the black cable. then there will be 2 nuts holding on the starter wires. one will be 8mm and the other 13mm. remove them with care cause the wires may and can break. when you remove starter check wires for corrosion or if they look fraigle. repair them if damaged.
then to put it back in is the same way you took it out. should take about 1.5 hrs total if you have never done it before.

Overall i would say skill level 3/10 only cause its trickey getting to that top bolt sometimes.

good luck,
Michael

SOURCE: Replacing the starter on 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan

with most front wheel drives you must remove the passenger tire and reach through to the starter bolt with an extension and if I remember write with a 15 mm socket you can reach through and take out the bolt

SOURCE: replace starter, 1997 dodge caravan.

THERE ARE 4 DIFFERENT ENGINE COMBINATIONS THIS VAN COULD HAVE. ONE 4 CYLINDER AND 3 SIX CYLINDERS. THEY ALL ARE RELATIVELY EASY. LABOR GUIDE SHOWS THE MOST DIFFICULT ONE ON A SIX CYLINDER TO BE 1 HOUR. THE STARTER IS ACCESSED UNDER VEHICLE REQUIRING A GOOD JACK AND SUITABLE JACK STANDS. MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT BATTERY BEFORE SERVICING ANY ELECTRICAL COMPONENT!!! HOPE THIS HELPS!!

SOURCE: I nedd to replace the starter on a 2004 Dodge

The started is located on the back side of engine (firewall side) next to the transmission bellhousing. To remove starter first disconnect the negative battery wire from battery.Raise the front of van up and use jackstands to support the van, block the rear tires. From under the van remove the solenoid wire from starter. Remove bolts from starter and remove starter from van. Installation is the reverse the removal. Hope this will help.

A jumper box got hooked up backwards to my 98 dodge caravan I replaced the battery and now it will crank but not start please help

This can be really bad. It possibly damages the computer. Check if you set any codes. It is easy in a Dodge, you don't need a code reader. Turn the key to 'on' position and off and 'on' 2x total (not cranking the starter, just before that). Leave it on and the check engine light will flash out the codes. You read it ...on..pause on,on equals 12. The codes will start with 12 and finish with 55. After 55 it is done. Everything in between 12 and 55 is important. Take a paper and pen and write it down. Then post them here and we'll see what's going on.

HAVING TROUBLE STARTING

Is the battery over four years old?
No one rebuilds starters, they get a rebuilt from the auto parts store.

Who is they and what are the issues?

I assume the engine turns over, now youv'e had the battery and starter looked at?
It either starts or it doesn't.
Long cranking times before starting, could be a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump, but the shop you go to, would know that!!

I replaced the starter and the starter relay and battery in my 1997 3.0 dodge caravan and it still will not start. Some how power is not getting to the starter.

Try routing a jumper cable to the starter terminal where the battery cable goes to & then hook it to your positive bayyery connection. Then try to start it. If nothing happens you have a bad ground connection

Vehicle Won't Turn over

probably has a fusible link near the starter...an easy way of checking this using a jumper wire from the battery to the starter...if it turns over then a link is bad...should be some wires on the starter that have a black plastic looking thing on them...those can be replaced or bypassed.

1997 Dodge Caravan won't start - has a tick tick sound

Hi savvyuserbyo;

That tick, tick sound is probably the starter solenoid trying to activate the starter.

Here's a couple of things you can try. Take a hammer and tap the starter motor (not real hard, just medium) and then try to start it.

The 2nd thing you can do it to take a piece of wire, like lamp cord and(with someone helping) touch one end to the small terminal on the starter. (There is a large battery size wire connected to a large terminal on the starter, this is not the one you use) use the small terminal. Have your helper touch the other end to the positive terminal of the battery.

If the engine cranks. the solenoid is probably bad. If it doesnt crank the starter is bad.

The final thing to do is to remove the starter (after you disconnect the ground lead of the battery) and take it to an Auto Zone type store and have them check it out for you. BTW, starter and solenoid are sold as a unit. I just replace mine on my 94 F159 and is cost $100 exchange. If you need a replacement get a rebuilt rathert than a new. Just as good and cheaper.

Hope this helps Good Luck Loringh PS Please leave a rating if Appropriate. Thanks
