How do I fix short in MAF harness or connector 97 Nissan d21 pickup?

The engine idles rough and dies. It also surges at freeway speeds. when engine is idling I reach under air filter and gently touch harness that's plugged into MAF and it changes rpm dramatically.

Stop engine. Remove air filter assembly, and pull the wiring harness apart. Replace bad wire. . .

SOURCE: engine starts, reaches high rpm, then slowly returns

Vacuum leaks. Check all hoses and intake bolts. Leaking EGR or plugged PCV valve. Air filter plugged. Leaking head gasket. Worn timing chain. Camshaft lobes worn. Valves burned or leaking. Fuel idle control system or sensor. Good luck!

SOURCE: 1997 Nissan Hardbody has rough idle/surges/stalls

the 2001 altima is what i have and I had the same problem as you. turned out to be a bad head gasket factory used cheap ones for a few years before they found the problem. one way to test this is to get a can of carborator cleaner and spray it around the area where the head meets the block under the intake problem should be around the 4th cylinder or close to driver side. if the head gasket is bad the rough idle will smooth out while you are spraying the head.

in the USA the EPA banned all those screws.
by law. the idle speed is fully computer controlled.
all USA cars, idle speed is regulator fast by the PCM
using device called IAC/ISC/ has 2 wire IAC.
IAC is bolted to TB lower side base, 2 wires.

if Idle hot is not at 800RPM and not regulating there are 3 common causes.
  1. ISC is stuck (needs cleaning)
  2. vacuum leaks, makes the ISC useless. (over-ranged) cracked vacuum lines and more.
  3. thermostat bad, engine never gets to 180f up. temp.

the screw here is factor OEM calibration
called the never touch screw.

yellow circled. this screw sets idle duty cycle to 50%
as covered in the real service manual
seem carb guys monkey this screw and IAC and PCM go nuts.
if was messed with by others I set mine to

2003 Chevrolet Impala ls 3.8l. "Hello, I have an

P0171 and P0174 are lean codes. There is likely a large vacuum leak or the MAF is bad.

Try starting the car and wiggling the connector for the MAF sensor. Also try tapping the MAF sensor. If the idle changes or the car stalls replace the MAF sensor.

The second shop should recognize that these codes don't have anything to do with the ignition module.

What is causing my 97 mazda pickup to idle rough then die?

2 things could be happening. One, the maf, or map sensore is bad. If there is a check engine light on, have it checked out. Second, it could be the throtle position sensor. Or just crappy gas. Rule the gas out first before changeing sensores.

97 nissan king cab running poor rough idle it surges/stumbles about every 15 to 20 second

I would start with the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. The IAC valve usually, USUALLY, trips the Check Engine Light, but, sometimes may not.

Aside from that, it could be other issues: spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor components/assembly, etc.

BTW, is the Check Engine Light on?

1997 Nissan pickup seems to be flooding with rough idle & black smoke. Techs troubleshooting computer is not picking up engine computer.

If his scanner won't pick up the computer then the fuse may be blown for the computer or the DLC data link connector fuse may be bad it has two. If the DLC is dead test the three fuses in the cab and the one in the engine compartment on passenger side. if still no Data then you have a bigger problem. The 97 98 changed and They had some problems with the harness Where the plug goes into the fuse inside the cab to the computer.

My 97 jimmy sometimes dies while driving and idling. no lights come on, fuel pump is working, is not overheating. once it dies, it starts up again immediately.

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
