My '93 SL-2 has a automatic, it will not go into

My '93 SL-2 has a automatic, it will not go into 3rd once driven for a while (like it shifts into neutral). Once the check engine light comes on. It will shift if I leave it in "3" instead of "D", at about 3,500 rpm, it goes straight to a lock-up of the converter.
. Any ideas? It also starts to downshift hard. It will not communicate with a code reader either.
