My 1996 Chevy Lumina gets hot, then wont start. Is there a temperature sensor that tells the fans to turn on? I've put Preston antifreeze in.
There is a sensor that tells the ECM to turn on the fan/s however the most common problem is the cooling fan motors go bad and need replacing. If you disconnect the electrical plug at the fan motor and run jumper wires to it from the battery the fans should run if not then the motor needs replacing.
SOURCE: I changed the antifreeze/coolant on a lincoln
There are two things that you need to look at, one is antifreeze type, many newer cars use a red antifreeze and it cools better than the green, Also, look for air bleeds, usually little fittings that look like a grease fitting, or brake bleeder screw, AND have heater(s) on full hot when filling the cooling system. Pressure test and look for any leaks.
