The manual calls for a slide-hammer puller. This has a large flange that bolts to the wheel studs and a weight that slides on a shaft to extract by force of impact. A lot of your parts houses will let you rent one. I have seen a large gear puller used effectively, but this is not optimal as it pushes the axle back against the joints, so basically it pushes against the whole engine to pry the hub out.
You may need to heat the hub up with a small hand torch, the heat may have fused it together a bit, and try tapping on it with a small mallet
