4.6L Engines

  1. Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat.
CAUTION Never open, service, or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. In addition, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

  1. Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the thermostat housing.
  2. Remove the two thermostat-housing retaining bolts and remove the thermostat housing.
  3. Remove the thermostat and O-ring seal. Inspect the O-ring for damage and replace, as necessary.
To install:
  1. Make sure all mating surfaces are clean.
  2. Install the thermostat, O-ring, and thermostat housing. Make sure the thermostat is positioned as shown in the figure.
  3. Install and alternately tighten the thermostat housing retaining bolts to 15–22 ft. lbs. (20–30 Nm). Connect the upper radiator hose.
  4. Fill the cooling system

How do I change the thermostat on a 99 Lincoln continental?

The top radiator hose where it connects to the engine is where the thermostat is. Take off the hose and the 2 bolts on the housing to get to the thermostat.

Do both cooling fans on 1999 lincoln continental have to work to keep from overheating

I'm not sure the thermostat is the problem. If the thermostat was stuck open the engine would not warm up and also not overheat.
If its stuck closed, the engine would warm up as well as the heater, then continue to the point of overheating.
If the cooling system is low on liquid coolant, or the water pump is not working, the coolant will not flow thru the heater and the sensor may not know to turn the fans on.

Having trouble with my 1997 lincoln continental i changed the radiator thermostat and the water pump and it still over heating please help

Have you burped the system? If air gets trapped it can prevent the thermostat from opening and make your engine overheat. To get the air out, start with a cold engine, turn the heat on vent or floor only and run full blast, run the engine with the radiator cap off until it gets to operating temperature. Keep an eye on the coolant level and add as needed until it doesn't drop in level for five minutes. Some cars may require removal of the thermostat so you can drill a small hole in it to allow air to escape from the engine side of the thermostat. Keep any eye on the temperature gauge to make sure you don't over heat it while trying to burp it.

I can't find where my thermostat is located on my 1967 lincoln continental. It has a 462 engine.I;m trying to change it.

All you should have to do on the older cars is follow the upper hose from the radiator to the engine. The housing on the engine where the connects is where the thermostat is located.
