If it backs up but won't go forward it's an internal transmission problem. You'll want to have a transmission shop do a complete rebuild. They always do that because taking it out and reinstalling it is such a big deal. (The transfer case merely splits the power between the front differential and rear differentials when you go into 4WD; it sends it only to the rear differential for 2WD). Shop around for prices and compare warranties.

Hi I have a 2001 Chevy suburban and I wanted to know if the transfer case a part of the transmission

No. Not a part of it. However it is attached to the output of the transmission. The t _ case then sends power to the front and rear axles via drive shafts.

Can only guess
The real issue & why ,don't know,
but the noise is a loose chain
Pull & Strip your case
Do not install a salvage yard part that may
be worst then yours
All the internal parts are avail at the places the trans shops
get their parts or online

nope. 4L60E is what fits and if done correctly, is okay. Check the front transfer case seal. They hardened, crack, cause ATF to drain out of the trans and into the transfer case - and 3/4 clutches fail. 3rd and 4th gears will be gone. Also, a clean cooler is vita.
