If it's not acting up, leave it alone. Alternators don't require changing until they fail.

AN ALTERNATOR IS REPLACED WHEN THE VOLTAGE THAT CHARGES THE BATTERY DROPS BELOW ABOUT 12.8 VOLTS, ALSO YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE IT IF THE BEARINGS FAIL AND OR SOME OTHER HARD PART FAILES LIKE THE ROTOR.

My 98 civic sat for a week, after a week i started it, and it started putting out white smoke. there was a loud sqealing sound for 5-10 seconds, and so i stopped the car. after the smoke cleared i tried...

The white smoke was probably oil that had seeped into the cylinder while the engine stood for that week, it is not right but if it does not re-occur you can overlook it for a while but you will have to attend to the valve stem seals at some stage. The squealing would be the altenator belt slipping on the pulley. Check the belt, it is either so loose that the altenator is not charging now, or the belt has snapped. Please rate this answer if you find it heplful.

Do i have to take out the crank pully to change my altenator on my 89 honda civic

No, but you may need to remove the cv axle to get it out.

You may also be able to move it to the passenger side and out the bottom.

It may help to get a haynes manual for your vehicle. It can save a lot of time over trying to figure it out on your own.
