CLICK HERE for belt routing possibilities based on installed options.

It is a tight fit - but you should not have to REMOVE anything to change the belt!

Use a 1/2" drive extension to release the belt tensioner.
While holding the belt tensioner over take the belt off of the power stearing pulley.
After that just work the belt off of the remainder of the pulleys until you have it off.

It is helpful to remove the inner fender to gain better access to the air conditioner pulley and crank pulley.

To put the new belt on reverse the process putting the belt on the power stearing pulley last while holding the belt tensioner over.

Better step-by-step...

  1. Release the belt tensioner.
  2. Remove the belt from the power steering and generator pulleys.
  3. Twist the belt for clearance from the tensioner and the front cover. Also twist the belt in order to clear the power steering pulley and engine mount bracket.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the right side splash shield. Turn the wheel to the extreme right.
  6. Remove the belt from the crankshaft and air conditioning compressor pulleys.
  7. Twist the belt for clearance between the idler pulley and the engine mount bracket.
  8. Remove the belt.

Thanks for using FixYa!! Please accept this answer to remove it from the work queue.

Thank You :D

Here is a link to the serpentine belt diagram. All that should be needed is a socket wrench to loosen and tighten the tensioner pulley. There should be no need to remove the power steering pump or the torque plates. Best of luck.

Shouldn't have to remove the pulley, just loosen the bolt to get the pulley to move enough to slide the new belt on.

Why won't it crank?

Not being able to turn the engine by hand is not a good sign. It would be odd for the engine to seize out of the blue without prior noises indicating a problem. Possible seized drive pulley ( alternator/AC compressor etc ). Try removing the serpentine belt to rule out a seized pulley. If the engine cranks/starts with the belt removed, suspect a seized accessory pulley

Seized A/C compressor

The cause of this is that the roller bearing that the AC compressor pulley turns on is frozen up, the bearing can be replaced but you will need to buy the pulley assembly to get the bearing and you will need a special puller to remove the pressed on pulley. As far as finding a proper belt size to bypass the compressor that is nearly impossible to do, you may get the measurements right but in most cases the belt size you need will not be available, When the factory builds a car or truck with "AC Delete" they install a bypass pulley and the same belt is used for both with and without AC. The cost to replace the bearing is low, and that would be the by far the easiest thing to do here. You can buy the AC tool you need online, just google the year and make.

How tough is it to replace aircondition compressor?

you need to remove the coolant surge tank, intake tube and box, move the ECU out of the way, remove the headlights for access to the radiator bolts, remove the radiator fan and the radiator, remove the serpentine belt and passenger side wheel and splash shield-remove the front air dam, then unbolt the low and high pressure hoses from the ac compressor, then remove the compressor-it is easily a 3 hour job taking it out and putting it back in.

Serpentine belt snapped 2 days in a row, the belt was burning the other day but today it just snapped and my anti freeze started to come out

A burning belt usually indicates a seized idler pulley on those gm cars. You will have to find which pulley is seized and change, it before replacing the belt or the new belt will only burn and snap again.

A/C compressor pulley is seized and burning the serpentine belt

yeah its seized up[ and they dont make a repair kit for that one either. they have at most auto parts stores an ac bypass pulley . its a bracket and pulley so you can bypass the factory ac unit and still run the factory belt. but if you decide to change the ac unit there are 5 bolts holding the unit down .have the system evacuated.loosen belt and drop down out of your way. take the ac lines off the compressor and set aside . there are two bolts on top in front and there are 3 bolts in back on top tieing together a triangle shape mounting plate , take all 5 loose and out.disconnect ac wires (snap clip) lift , lightly pry off old ac unit.set aside and reverse the procedure to install your new or salvage yard ac unit. refrigerant chargers can be purchased from wall mart ( there cheaper) at $30. roughly 2 1/2 cans will completely fill the system just follow on label instructions. its all easy to do if you can use wrenches and have a little knowledge. and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself. and save a bunch of $ along the way.

More than likely it's the A/C compressor clutch is going bad. Cut the old serpentine belt off and install a shorter belt to bypass the A/C compressor for now.
