Question about 1988 Ford F 350

On the 350 we are having fuel tank problems. When running on the back tank she hums right along, but when we switch to the front it coughs, backfires, and looses a ton of power. How does it switch tanks anyway?? The tank switch is NOT on the main line anywhere...

You have three pumps on your truck. The high pressure on the front (you hear it "prime" when you turn the key), and a low pressure one in each tank. The switching mechanism could be an issue, there may be a wiring problem to the pump on the front tank, or you could be losing that low pressure pump.

BTW, how often do you use front tank? Could be a bad fuel too.

Check fuel pressure at both setting, front & rear. I believe it's 2 different fuel pumps also.

Ground the motor (electrically) to the frame of your Blazer the apply some 12v power (or 13v) to see if 'she' hums or pumps for that matter. (Some will hum but not pump a thing of course). I'm guessing you have an older K-5 or something. There's a filter between the fuel line and carb if nobody ever showed you that one (on the older ones with 350's 4bbl's anyway).

I have a 1995 fi50 with duel fuel tanks it runs on the rear tank but wont when i switch to front tank

They may have seperate fuses so check that first. Then also they will have different fuel pumps too I am guessing on that. There may be only one inline pump running along the chassis underneath the car but most are inserted right into the tank you are using. Let me know what you find out and if we didn't find it I will come up with another idea or two. Be kind with the rating in the end. I'm a nice guy but along ways away. LOL Raz

You are right. There are three pumps. It sounds like the transfer pump in the front tank is bad. The in tank pumps just supply the high pressure pump to keep it primed. You need the front pump.

Somewhere along the the line you may have a fuel blockage or a good dose of water in your fuel tank.Check the water in tank 1st.Add 1 litre of metholated spirits to every 20 litres of fuel. This will allow the water to break down and be burnt through the motor over time.Do this twice. If this does not work, there may be a glob of **** in the fuel tank that blocks the pickup. If this is the problem, the tank needs to be taken out and cleaned.I hope this is a start to get you back on the road.

Either the fuel line from the front tank to the switching valve is plugged or kinked, or the valve is not moving all the way to that tank (if electrically switched). Pull the hose (from that tank) off at the valve--do you get good fuel flow? If the front tank is lower than the valve, try switching the fuel lines from the two tanks at the valve, and set the switch for the rear tank. If it now runs, clean the valve or replace it.
