Is the engine idle just set a bit low anyway? Can you access the idle adjustment and turn it up a tad? The sluggish drive may be in need of an engine service but a 1.3 is small for this car. Check out online car owner forums to see if others think so to.
check or replace fuel filter for clogging up. if it does clog up, then you will not get enough fuel to engine to run it properly. it will stall at stops, and be very sluggish on takeoff. check fuel pressure if need be. could also be a bad catylist convertor. so check above first. Rent a fuel pressure
guage from advance or oreilley's and check fuel pressure if needed. they will tell you the proper fuel pressure for your car.
have the vehicle scanned for error codes at autozone, its free. Post codes for more help....These engines have issues with the COPs (ignition coils-over-plugs) failing prior to 80k miles. When they fail typical problems are: Sputtering under load/acceleration, rough idle, random misfires, random stalling, light or heavy jerking under load (usually at 15-35mph and 45-65mph)..hopefully this helps!!
Check the throttle body and see if it has build up around the butterfly. If so, clean the butterfly with throttle body cleaner. This may be it. There are other possibilities but this is a simple inspection.
Try replacing your spark-plugs/wires, cap/rotor, air-filter. Spray some WD-40 on the throttle-body recoil spring.Get a can of carburettor/throttle-body cleaner and spray the inside of the throttle-body.
Could be many things but check the simple and cheap stuff first: fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensor, or spark plugs. If that's not it the more expensive problem would be: alternator, gas pump, or maybe even something with the transmission
