Check fuse for the starter. And also try and give it a jump. It may light things up but it may not be enough juice for the starter

If the engine has over heated it may have blown the head gasket, you say the engine noise changed and you have power loss, get a mechanic to check it and try not to drive it

1999 Crown turned ignition switch to start - heard pop - no electrical power

If nothing works including the lights, something happened between the battery and the fuse box.
There are some fuseable links between the battery and the starter solenoid or between the solenoid and the fuse box.
I'd start with the battery cables and look for those fuseable link wires.

This system can be scanned for faults, you need that scan done to see what is wrong in the electronics, this takes a dealer level scan tool.

Intermitent electrical failure on golf

ignition switch on its way out, as a golf owner im sure awre theyre common, also possible ignition relay, though i reckon ignition switch it has two outputs and they fail intermittanly, eventualy they will stop all tgether, new swith bout £20 though fitting means removal of steering wheel and a puller is required to remove the housing.
Good luck Davelee
