Pontiac G6 2005 - starts then stalls immediately

Engine starts but will not idle....stalls immediately...also if coasting to a stop engine will stall...if I keep my foot on the accelerator and give it a little gas when starting or coming to a stop the engine will run smoothly.

Hi, I recently been have a problem with my 1998 Honda, passport. While driving my Honda it would shut down then starts again on its own while rolling. At times it would not start again on its own you need...

sure, rolling in gear you mean. (same effect as push starting a car with M/T) what speed did it restart, 5mph or 50 or 85mph.?)
what transmission. A/T or M/T? BEG ERROR there !

shut down,?
you mean stalls,
and engine can do 3 things
run too slow (way below 800RPM idle , illegal idle speeds)
stalls (rpm goes to zero or you find zero power from the engine )
if you stop the car, and the engine stalls that is an engine stall.

or run perfectly.

does your model have a tachometer to you can see RPM?
and if idle controls work,
not posting the trans type, (non body does here) makes answers near impossible. infact most will just ignore you posts.

with a M?T car the engine immediately returns (hot ) to 800rpm
and is regulated very closely by the EFI brain (PCM)
if not you are seeing IDLE control failure.
with and A/T there is no MT clutch and when you stop
the autoclutch drags (wastes fuel like mad) and puts a huge load
on the engine, stopped say at a red light. the idle controls
on A/t are greatly taxed here.
so RPM can drop real low. fail. or stall. below 800
a stall happens at about 400 RPM.
the M/T can at any time be restarted on the fly (moving)
but just dumping the clutch. or just waiting as you coast in gear.
this is how push starting any M/T car works.
but on an A/T car , on the fly restarts take huge speeds.
and only works on A/T that have 2 oil pumps.
the A/T with no rear pump , the A/T can not be push starter
or coast restarted, if the front pump is dead(engine stalled)
im not looking up your tranny spec. because you never stated, it.

my engine stalls. (not tranny slip)
1: bad 12vdc power to any EFI system component.
2: never ever tuned up per the free operators guide in glove box.
3: lost engine compression. 1 or all cylinders.
4: lost spark. (or timed wrong, early cars have distributors)
5: bad fueling. too much or too little

when the engine runs , does the MIL, CEL glow running
btw the CEL also glows, at all stalls. the lamp only means.
I HAVE ELECT power, now.... only.

1995 grand am se 2.3L. starts idles, runs good. stalled while coasting to stop. started right away fine, idles and runs good and smooth, but dies when put in reverse or drive. after towing it home. after...

the question is-- was you foot on the brake at home or was just the hand brake applied
when driving , slowing , stopping standing , all have the foot on the brake which is activating a brake booster and if that is faulty , the vacuum leak causes the problem

Will not idle when you come to a stop. it will start back up and run.

Given this limited amount of information, my first thought is that your transmissions lock-up torque converter is not releasing.

It is an automatic transmission.......correct?

I need to know if the engine flat out dies as your vehicle stops... or does it spit and sputter... then die slowly????

If it dies very quickly just as your car is coming to rest:
There is a solenoid (electriclly actuated) valve inside the tranny pan. It is usually servicable without removing the transmission. It locks up your converter under certain conditions; and should release it when you apply the brakes and/or slow down.

If the lockup converter fails to release as you come to a stop, your engine will die abruptly.
This is either a malfunction of the lock-up solenoid or valve; or it could be a wiring issue.

VERY IMPORTANT: When restarted immediately after a stall, does it idle in gear smoothly?????

Is your "Service Engine Soon" light on?

Now if it is a slowwwww death, and does not idle smoothly immediately after a stall:
Then it is probably not related to your transmission at all; but rather the engine itself.

Areas to consider are :The fuel system (fuel pump, injectors, pressure regulator) vacuum hoses, ignition system (bad spark plugs, failed plug wires, weak ignition coils), or the emissions system (sensors etc).
Also, there is an IAC motor that controls the engine speed at idle.

That will require more data from you if possible.

Good Luck!!

Automatic vehicle stalls at low rpm

This is proplem with the IAC valve , try clean the valve and if that doesnt work replace it.

An IAC (idle air control) motor is designed to adjust the engine idle RPM speed by opening and closing an air bypass passage inside the throttle body

1995 Maxima idling at 400 rpms. No diagnostic code.

If a mouse chewed the wire into you may need to check all the wires. It sounds like you need to check the operation of the idle air control valve and it's wiring circuit. Good fortune!

My 95 Buick regal with 3.8 engine stalls while i am stopping.

when coasting to a stop do you have your foot on the brake
if so , test the brake booster for a vacuum leak
simple test
put the hand brake on and start the car
idles ok ,--no problems
put your foot on the brake
idles ok --not the booster
engine stalls , falters ---brake booster failure

Idles rough when coasting

Have you checked all the vacuum pipes around the top of the engine.?
It`s not losing oil pressure, it`s just about to stall when the oil light comes on.
Listen for a hissing noise under the hood.
Vacuum leaks can cause real problems with the inlet manifold pressures.
Good luck.
