Question about 2004 Hyundai Elantra

Overheating it gave no indication until all the sudden it pegged on hot. there is no leaks ,no warning lights nothing. to get home i kept having to stop and let it cool then some times i had to add water but it looks as if thiers no circulation or that coolant is goin into the motor.. PLEASE HELP!

Check ur oil and see if milkey gray or white in color if so u have bad engine problems the least a head gasket blown the worst the head is cracked and or warped,,, replace every thing to do with cooling when repaired,u dont know what caused it.

SERVICE ENGINE SOON light has nothing to do with overheating or leaks ! OBD2 - emissions . DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the PCM / ECM - engine computer . Probably a sensors or emission problem . Take an have it checked .

Hi, you wern`t clear on the year and model of your Honda, and was the radiator and hose replaced by a sevice shop or yourselves? Possible causes of your car overheating may be caused by not ``bleeding`` the air out of the cooling system properly. Another problem may be a malfunctioning thermostsat, another problem may be the Electric rad fan not cycling on. There could be a few more causes but I would have to know more details of your car as mentioned above..

You are describing a slow coolant leak and the resultant no heat and blockoverheating symptoms. The no heat is because there is insufficient coolant to cycle through the heater core, and the chuggin you describe is the engine indicating serious overheating.
With engine cold, you must add water--not anti-freeze--to the radiator itself, until it reaches the top of the radiator, then start the engine. If you do not have a radiator cap in addition to the overflow bottle (some vehicles don't), you must still add water to the radiator, even if you have to bypass the overflow bottle hose to do it. Add water until no more will go into the radiator. Start engine, let idle until operating temperature is reached. Thermostat should open and a good bit of the water will "sink" into the depth of the radiator. If you have no radiator cap, observe the temperature guage. When it reaches normal operating temp, when the thermostat opens, the temp will drop briefly at first, and you will notice warm air from the heater/defroster.
Once engine is warm and known to be full of water, seal radiator cap and/or system, and let idle for 30 minutes. Use this time to locate the "mystery leak." They can be very hard to find, and some won't leak until after the engine is turned off. During this idle period, observe the vehicle exhaust from the tailpipe as well as looking for actual water leaks: sometimes a bad head gasket can be diagnosed this way; if the exhaust is white and thick like steam, and smells like anit-freeze, you have a more serious problem. It is possible that after the repeated overheating cycles you have endured you may now have both a "mystery leak" and a blown head gasket.
Once leak is located, your next step is to let engine cool completely, drain the water, fix the leak, and then and only then add new antifreeze of the proper rating and ratio recommended by Chevy for your vehicle.
Anytime you drain a cooling system and refill it, it is necessary to check the overflow bottle at least 3 times in the first week after repair to ensure that you have the proper coolant level, and have not either missed another leak or not correctly repaired one. You MUST check it before you drive the vehicle the second time after the first repair attempt because it is normal to need to add more coolant than you added initially after the repair because of air trapped in the cooling system that will only be expelled after the first start/stop heating cycle. If after 1 week of daily normal driving you have only added a little more coolant once, and there are no more problems, you can be very comfortable that you have fixed your car.

I assume you have checked the cooling system to ensure that first, that it is completely full of coolant (not just the overflow tank) with no air locks and second that there are no leaks anywhere and the radiator cap is in good condition. The heater hoses and those pesky little bypass hoses in the cooling system tend to go hard and split after a few years, allowing coolant loss. Those spring type hose clamps tend to be less effective in clamping as the hoses become hard. Worm drive ones are the best to use.

If there are no leaks or air locks, the over heating could also be caused by a clogged radiator (more than 15% restriction in the radiator flow capacity will cause overheating problems), a faulty water pump or a faulty thermostat.

If there are no leaks and water pump and thermostat are working correctly, but undetected loss of coolant once the engine heats up, then it could indicate a problem with the head gasket (Usually caused by allowing engine to become excessively overheated when cooling system has run dry) allowing very hot high pressure combustion gases into the engine water jacket, which super heats the coolant in the engine block, which then boils off, and is released via the cap. If the head gasket is really bad it will leak water into the cylinders and into the oil in the sump. This is indicated by an emulsion of water and oil mix on the dipstick.

If unsure take vehicle to a cooling system specialist and have them do a pressure test and more thorough diagnosis.

You might have a sticking thermostat. If it's sticking shut, it won't open when needed and the engine will overheat. Even though the water in the radiator is not hot then, the water in the block of the engine is boiling.

After that overflow, the cooling system was underfilled, so when the thermostat finally did open, it had plenty of room to refill, which is what you saw when the water got "suddenly sucked in".

My recommendation is to replace the thermostat (and gasket), because as a point of diagnosis, it is a relatively cheap part but can have terribly inconvenient consequences when malfunctioning. If you're handy, get a Haynes or Chilton manual from the auto parts store and do it yourself.

Also, the radiator cap is not good to mess with when the engine is hot. Doing as you did by opening it while overheated upsets the balance between the coolant in the block and radiator. There's a small rubber hose from the top corner of the radiator to a plastic (probably translucent) overflow tank on one side of your engine compartment. Under normal circumstances, you should check the coolant level there, as it exists to keep the system in balance. Note that I said "normal" - which means anytime it hasn't overheated to the point of leaking out of the radiator cap or leaking elsewhere.

The gentleman above gave you the correct starting point. There are red and amber lights. Amber usually indicates a problem with the engine electronics or emissions system. Red lights are related to charging or alternator problems and engine overheating. If a light comes on you need to check the related system before you wind up disabled on the side of the highway.
