If there is no location specifically for a breaker bar the most common practice is to take a socket and attach it to the center nut in the pulley. then move it counter-clockwise. this will apply enough torque to loosen the belt and slide it off.

How do you take the serpentine belt off to replace the alternator

Insert a ratchet or breaker-bar drive (end of bar) into the square hole in the tensioner / idler pulley mount. Move the tensioner mount in whatever direction is required to release tension on the belt. You will then be able to remove the belt.

CAN NOT TAKE OFF SERPENTINE BELTS TO REPLACE ON 1999 MAXIMA HOW DO YOU?

You will first need to find out what type of bolt is in the tensioner pulley. Once you find out, you will need that tool, prefer on a socket. You will need a breaker bar or a ratchet with a leverage bar to use for ease. Make note of the belt diagram and pulleys. Once you insert the socket and breaker bar into the tension roller, push the bar and the belt will loosen up the more you push, once you get the belt off of one roller, it"s easy rest of the way. You basically have to releive tension on a spring loaded arm to loosen the belt,

How do i replace the serpentine belt that goes tothe alt. ?

You will need a breaker bar to release the tensioner. A breaker bar is a long ratchet that doesn't ratchet. The breaker bar size for your car is 1/2".

You will see a square hole on the tensioner and that is where the breaker bar goes. Put the breaker bar in there and pull on it until it gives you enough slack to pull the belt off. Make sure to pull the right way to release the tension. IF it wont release the tension don't yank on it try going the other way, It will help to have two people to do this job. You only need to pull it off one pully then slowly let the tensioner go back.

To put the new belt on make sure you run the new belt the exact same way as the old. Again you will need to release the tension from the tensioner and slip the belt over the last pulley.

Replacing the serpentine belt on a 2003 toyota camry 2.4 engine. How do I loosen the tension on the belt? Do you have a diagram?

The arm on the tensioner (the roller which presses against the belt to give it tension) should have a hole in it for a 1/2" drive on the end of a ratchet or breaker bar.

Inserting the ratchet or breaker bar in this hole will allow you to move the arm, releasing the tension on the belt.

Belt snapped last night think it was serpentine belt how much am i looking at to fix?

Depending on where you purchase the serpentine belt, and whether it's a budget or lifetime version, prices range from $18 to $33.

You can replace this belt yourself.

The belt goes around, and under various pulleys on your engine. There is ONE pulley that puts tension on this belt. There is a bracket, or 'arm', that this tensioner pulley is attached to. One simply takes a 1/2 inch breaker bar, and inserts it into a 1/2 inch square hole in that bracket.
You then pull the bracket over to one side with the breaker bar, (The direction will be pulling the tensioner pulley away from the serpentine belt), and slip the serpentine belt off of the pulleys.
The belt diagram of how the belt is placed around the pulleys, should be on the fan shroud support, or under the hood.

Replacing a serpentine belt

Don't have a chart, video, or diagram available at the moment. Can offer you generic advice.

1.Somewhere in the middle of that serpentine belt, that is wrapped around all those pulleys, is an Idler tensioner Pulley. All this pulley does, is put tension on that serpentine belt. Usually located somewhere in the middle.

The Idler tensioner Pulley will be on a bracket. It will be on the end of the bracket. The bracket usually has a 1/2 inch square hole in it. This is used for a tool, that resembles a 1/2 inch breaker bar.
-> I, use a 1/2 inch breaker bar.
The 1/2 inch breaker bar is inserted into this square hole, and the bracket is pulled to one side.
This pulls the tensioner pulley away from the serpentine belt, allowing the belt to have slack, and then the belt is slipped off of one of those pulleys. Release the pressure slowly, remove the tool. Then the serpentine belt is removed all the way.

(The Idler tensioner pulley bracket, can only be moved in one direction, to take pressure off of the serpentine belt. The direction opposite, of it putting pressure on the serpentine belt.

The spring used to put pressure is Very strong. This is also an area, where you can easily slip, cutting your knuckles, or fingers, or hand, on sharp objects. Use caution, you may want to wear a glove, or gloves!)

Then the new serpentine belt is wound around the pulleys in the correct pattern, the Idler Tensioner Pulley is once again pulled to the side, and the last of the serpentine belt is slid into place. Then you slowly release the tensioner pulley, and it puts pressure on the serpentine belt once more.

Make sure the serpentine belt is in the grooves of the pulleys, and is wound around in the correct pattern.

On the car hood inside, or on the radiator support, or perhaps on the inner fender well, or in the Owners Manual, it should show the correct pattern for installing the serpentine belt.

Serpentine belt replacement.

Locate the automatic belt tensioner, it should have a black plastic pulley on it. Insert a 1/2 inch breaker bar in the hole thats on the tensioner, and pull to relieve the tension on the belt. Slip old belt off the pulley and slowly release the force you have on the bar untill it stops moving. Route new belt, and move tensioner with bar to gain needed slack to get the belt on, Release tension, and remove bar. makeing sure new belt is in alignment.
Be careful...watch for pinch points, around your fingers and hands when performing this job.
Also, check the pulleys and idlers for wear before installing the new belt. They will wobble if the bearings are worn and should be replaced.
Good luck, hope this helps.

How do i release the tension pulley

Usually the carrier pully "tension pully" has a square hole in the front of it. It usuallu takes a 1/2 inch breaker bar but occassionally they will use 3/8 breaker bar. Find the hole, insert breaker bar, or a ratchet (you may need a pipe on the ratchet) and put pressure on it. Generally counterclockwise is the direction you need to go. That will release the tension on the belt while you are maintaining pressure on the breaker bar while it is inserted in the pulley. Remember how the belt is routed.
