Most water pumps have a small hole on lower side of W/pump, little below the shaft! If coming from there the seal is going-replace water pump with brand new one/ not a rebuilt one, I' ve had bad results W/rebuilts
Is it a slow leak or fast leak? The first thing you need to do is determine where the leak is coming from. Look at the radiator hose ends, the radiator itself, the thermostat housing, the heater core hoses, the water pump housing, just anywhere coolant would go. Once you've found it, get back to me.
Drain some coolant from radiator to below level of thermostat housing. Be careful to keep pets away as coolant is very sweet smelling and poison. Remove two bolts holding thermostat housing in place and use catch pan to catch fluid. Clean all gasket material from both sides of housing. Clean threads of bolts and use gasket shellac on them and new gasket. Install thermostat same as old one was, install new gasket, tighten bolts to correct torque value as found in your handy dandy shop manual. Refill radiator and check for leaks.
Thats the water pump. There is a testing gauge that can be hooked up at a Radiator shop to find the leak. If it would not be leaking I would say to check the fan clutch which the blade mounts to for this noise. But with a leak and a sound it can very well be the water pump.
Your engine is constantly warming and cooling. Your radiator cap has a set pressure release. As the pressure builds it allows coolant to flow out of the radiator into the makeup tank. As the engine cools it sucks coolant out of the makeup tank back into the radiator. If it overheats a lot then the makeup tank will overflow out of the overflow tube and it usually drips out under the car. If your radiator cap is bad or weak it can let coolant out when it shouldn't. This isn't a frequent problem but it can be a cause. The most likely cause is your thermostat is bad. The thermostat is closed when you start your engine and keeps the coolant inside of the block so it can't circulate through the radiator and cool until your engine is warmed up then at a set temperature (depending on thermostat), usually 195 degrees it starts to open and allow the coolant to circulate and cool. The thermostats can get bad and stick partial open or all the way closed and open. Yours is probably not functioning right and causing your makeup tank to overflow. When engine is cool look at makeup tank and you will see a minimum and maximum mark. Fill to maximum with coolant then start the car and let it warm up and monitor the coolant level and see if it is overflowing.
really this could be one of several issues, does the vehicle run Hot, are you having to fill the reservoir with water or coolant, there is a hose that runs from the cap (overflow hose) to the reservoir, in addition to the upper and lower hoses, finally the water pump. the water pump is equipped with weep holes, which allow fluid to weep out when the pump is bad. finally the thermostat, hopefully one of these can solve your issue, good luck!
hi, i dont know about the dipstick, but your overheating problem is most likely to be the thermostat...sounds like its stuck in the closed position,not allowing colder water to circulate, hence the overheating.......needs changing
