Question about 1998 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

Spark plug removal for 1996 Chevy S-10 Pick-up

6 cylinder engine and I can remove all plugs except one. Drivers side center plug is blocked by the steering column. Anyone with experience know of a special tool or do you have to drop the steering column?

It take's about 10 min to remove and replace that plug, You need a spark plug socket with a built in swivel and extension. All the plugs should be removed from going through the wheel well by just moving the slash guard out of the way. With the number #3 plug, (drivers side center) Your going to have to use the swivel socket to break loose the spark plug then remove by hand, there is not enough room for the socket and plug to be removed so it needs to be removed by hand and installed by hand too. Once the new plug is installed you can torque it by working the socket back on and then the extension. Good luck and hope this helps, all the other plug can be replaced through the wheel wel; without removing any other thing un less your a larger person and would like to remove the wheel for more room or just by jacking the S10 up but the front frame. Keep me posted and careful not to break a plug.

Take the cover off the intermediate shaft under air cleaner box. air cleaner just remover the 10mm by the fuse block and then unscrew the air intake hoses and lift up. take the cover off shaft by gear box. use an 11mm and take the bolt out. pry shaft back with screw driver. and then you should be able to lift it up and get right to it

Mechanics Times Savers maks a special cone shaped socket for this application. you are able to work it around the steering arm since it is cone shaped, not only that it is also a low profile socket. they make them in 2 sizes 5/8" and 13/16" and here are the part numbers
hs58-s=5/8"
hs1316-s=13/16"

i know this because i sell tools for a living and currently have these in stock and have had them for 3 yrs now.

The best solution if you tried to use the reguler spark plug socket and the swievel extension, the only one difference. is do you need the 2 ft long extension between the fender and the tire use the ratched outside the truck , y hope do you understand mi advice good luck .is no matter if you use the 3/8 or 1/2 drive

I changed mine buy dropping he steering column from the gear box then was simple to change takes an extra 10 min i tried all sizes of sparkplug sockets ans swivles didnt work so i dropped the column

Just guessing but alot of deep spark plug sockets have a wrench fitting on the end so you can turn it with a wrench instead of using a ratchet. Second option.... ok this is a McGiver thing but if all you have is a regular deep socket maybe you can get a pair of visegrips around the socket and undo the the plug,That may give you enough room to get your hands in there.

The fuel filter will be under the vehicle on the inside of the frame rail on the drivers side about under where the drivers seat is.

A tune-up is not bad. The plugs can be accessed through the inner fenders. with the front of the vehicle jacked up there will be plenty of room to work in the fender opening. The only plug that will give you any problems is number 5 which is the center plug on the drivers side. It is conveniently located right behind the steering shaft. They make a special socket just for this plug. You can use a regular spark plug socket, a wrench and a little creativity to remove it also.

How do you check the firing order on a chevy small block engine ?


Firing order for small block chevy is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The cylinders are numbered 1-3-5-7 on the driver's side of the engine counting front to back. Passenger side is 2-4-6-8, front to back. You will need to get #1 cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke. To do this, remove the #1 spark plug and remove the coil wire from the distributor cap. You will need a helper for the next step. Place your index finger in the empty spark plug hole, Have your helper bump the starter with the ignition key, When #1 cylinder comes up on the compression stroke, the pressure will push your finger away from the spark plug hole. Don't worry, this doesn't hurt. Turn the key off. Check the timing mark on the harmonic balancer behind the crankshaft pulley. It should be pretty close to lining up with the "0" timing mark on the pointer attached to the engine block. Now pull the distributor cap and see where the rotor cap is pointing. This will be #1 on the distributor cap. The spark plug wire from the #1 plug will occupy that position. The next position on the distributor cap will be for the plug wire coming off the #8 cylinder. The rest of the plug wires will attach to the distributor cap in the above mentioned firing order counting clockwise. If you do not wish to place your finger in the #1 spark plug hole, you can use a piece of paper towel roll up and stuck in the hole just enough to form a seal. When the piston comes up on the compression stroke it will force the paper towel out. Any questions, just let me know.

Where is the number one spark plug wire go on the distributor cap of a 1995 chevy s-10 vortec v-6 engine


Starting at the point closest to the front of the vehicle for no 1 position on the distributor connect in clockwise direction 1-6-5-4-3-2.
If you are not sure get no 1 piston at TDC. Remove spark plug on drivers side front of the engine. Insert a wooden or plastic dowel into the plug hole and turn the engine with a wrench until the dowel reaches its topmost point. Be careful not to get the dowel fouled inside the cylinder.
Now remove the distributor cap. The rotor should be pointing towards you. This is no 1 position on the distributor. If the rotor is pointing away from you then it is at no 4 position.

Firing order on a 305 on the cap. Got the wires all messed up...


This method is good for the firing order on all chevy small block v8 engines from 265 cubic inches to 400 cubic inches. This would include 265, 283, 305, 327, 350, 400 cu. in. chevy small block v8 engines.

Let's cover some safety concerns first. If you try to troubleshoot a mixed up firing order with the engine running, you could be in for a serious shock,.. literally. You can do it, with certain precautions, but you really don't need to check the firing order with the engine running. You definitely don't want to try checking the firing order if you are wearing any kind of pacemaker or sensitive electromechanical prosthesis. The voltage coming out of the ignition coil is in the thousands. Common sense dictates that you wouldn't stick a knife in an electrical outlet, so you wouldn't want to take chances with being shocked by the electrical discharge from your classic chevy's ignition coil either. The firing order makes sense if you know how the cylinders are numbered. The number one cylinder is the front most on the drivers side and 2 being the front most on the passenger side. From front to back, the cylinders are odd numbered on the drivers side, and even numbered on the passenger side.

I took of*** my spark plug wires working on my small block 350 pickup and I don't remember the the firing order to put the new wires back on. Is there a diagram anywhere or is it even that difficult to...

Setting the rest of the firing order is just a matter of repetition. Be sure to count the spark plugs from front to back on each side of the motor to identify the correct cylinder number in the firing order.

Change plugs and wire and engine will not acclerate. This is a built 350 short block chevy with pro charger.


350 Chevy engine in what? 1990 Corvette? Who built it, did you?

Sounds as though you have plug wires wrong.
Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Distributor Ignition System:
Distributor rotates Clockwise. (Rotor)
Find Number 1 tower on distributor cap, go Clockwise with Firing Order.

Distributorless Ignition System:
VIEWING the engine from the Front of the car.

Spark plug wire connections along the back, starting from Left side going to Right side;
2-3-7-4

Spark plug wire connection towards the Front of the engine;
6-1-5-8

(To guess I would say you have 5 and 7 wires switched)

Left side cylinder order is 1-3-5-7, going from front to back.
Drivers side is Left side.
Right side cylinder order is 2-4-6-8, going from front to back.

I replaced my spark plug wires on my 1996 chevy truck. may have crossed one,need a diagram from the spark plugs to the distributer cap.


Since you didn't state whether it is a V6 or V8, I'll give you both.

V6 -4.3Liter
Firing Order is 1-6-5-4-3-2
Distributor rotor turns Clockwise
Number 1 spark plug tower on distributor cap, faces the front of the engine.

->Drivers side, spark plug order in engine, starting from the Front going back:
1-3-5
->Passenger side, spark plug order in engine,
starting from the Front going back:
2-4-6

If it's Electronic, the distributor cap has a Left side, (Drivers side), and a Right side, (Passenger side)
Starting from the Front, going back on the Left side,
3-1-5
Starting from the Front going back on the Right side,
2-4-6

V8-5.0, 5.7, and 7.4Liter
Firing Order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Distributor rotor turns Clockwise
Number 1 spark plug tower on distributor cap,
faces Front, towards the Drivers side.

Electronic distributor cap has two sides. Drivers, (Left), side and Passenger, (Right), side.
Starting from Front going back on Drivers side,
1-7-3-5
Starting from Front going back on Passenger side,
8-2-4-6
