Question about 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Jetta TDI and I just put a new (used) turbo in. It surprisingly runs after reassembly, but now smokes a very whitish smoke. It may be coolant, but I am not sure how it would get into the engine. Maybe it'll go away after running for a bit.

How to recognize if my turbo is causing blue smoke from the exhaust vs a blown head gasket. I don't have anti freeze mixed with my oil but it smoke coming out the exhaust when the car is running. ...

It's very simply to find out if the turbocharger is causing blue smoke from the exhaust vs a blown head gasket. So, remove the turbocharger's compressor inlet centre hose (from the aluminium side of the turbo). Then see if there's in plenty of oil coming out from the hose and from the turbo. I'm 100% convinced that the turbocharger is damaged in your case. You can remove also the exhaust pipe out from the turbocharger, and see if there's a lot of oil coming out.
Repair or replace bad turbocharger with a new one (or with a second hand in good condition one). Good Luck!

if the old turbo blew, chances are you have swarf in the top of the cylinders and it has burnt the valve seats.white smoke is normally unburnt fuel/water mix.also if the car has been standing it could be just condensation it the exhaust pipes which will dissipate when car is left to run until very hot or thrashed for about 10 mins.hope its the latter.....

It is sometimes hard to start my jetta tdi. When this happens and I finally get it started, qite a bit of thick smoke comes out of the exhaust. Any thoughts?

It is hard starting my VW 2003 Jetta. It usually take 5 to 10 cranking before it turns over. Then it run normally. It only happens when the car has not been driven for about 6 hours.

2001 Jetta 1.8T, 100K miles. Smokes when hot.

Ouch! you've got engine coolant in the exhaust from a leak somewhere...DO NOT run this engine until you get someone (dealer is best in this instance) to diagnose ($50-125)
