Question about 1994 Toyota Tercel

94 tercel 4 speed shift fine, but transmission will not engage.

I have a front wheel drive 94 toyota tercel 4 speed, with 160k miles. When I engage the 1 year old clutch and put the car in gear 1,2,3,4, or r; it will not move. I'm thinking the transmission is shot. But I had no early indication of a tranny problem. Is it possible for the tranny to go witout any warning? Any suggestion on what can be the problem?

Have you checked the fluid gear oil itself 1st hmmm would you elaborate on this for me is the linkage connected and have you done any work to the said vehicle prior or just one day woke up and this is the issue

Without knowing how the 4X4 works you don't have much chance of finding the problem , (tapping on stuff ) ? There is an electronic control module that makes this system work . Could have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's stored in the (GEM)
Transfer Case -Electronic Shift on the Fly (ESOF) Operation The electronic shift on the fly (ESOF) system is an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4H mode at speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph). To engage or disengage 4L range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.
The transfer case is equipped with an electromagnetic clutch which is located inside the case. This clutch is used to spin up the front driveline when shifting from 2WD to 4H mode at speed. When the control switch on the instrument panel is turned, the generic electronic module (GEM) recognizes that a shift has been requested and activates the electromagnetic clutch and the relays which power the transfer case shift motor. When the shift motor reaches the desired position, as determined by the contact plate position inputs to the GEM, power to the shift relays and motors will be removed. When the transfer case front and rear output shafts are synchronized, the spring loaded lockup collar mechanically engages the mainshaft hub to the drive sprocket. Finally, the front axle collar is engaged and the electromagnetic clutch is deactivated.
Shifts between 2WD and 4H can be made at any speed up to 88 km/h (55 mph). Listed below are the inputs and outputs needed by the GEM to execute a change between any of these modes.
Feature Inputs:
  • 4WD mode switch (various resistances; go to Table 1).
  • Contact plate position inputs A, B, C, D (grounded when closed, open circuit when open; go to Table 4).
Feature Outputs:
  • 4x4 shift motor relay outputs (go to Table 2).
  • Transfer case clutch relay (grounded when relay is activated, open circuit when relay is deactivated).
  • 4x2/4x4 vacuum solenoid (grounded when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
  • Cluster indicators (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
When shifting into or out of 4L, the GEM requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake is applied, and the transmission is in NEUTRAL.

I can feel my trooper shift into 4x4 but I'm not


I had this happen on my 94 automatic. 4x4 "engages" but no power to front wheels. One of the front axles went bad so the 4x4 doesn't engage on either front wheel. It was a $800 fix.

  • Shifting from 2HI to 4HI Press and release the 4HI button. This can be done at any speed, and the front axle will lock automatically.

  • Shifting from 4HI to 2HI Press and release the 2HI button. This can be done at any speed, and the front axle will unlock automatically.

  • To shift from 2HI or 4HI to 4LO, the vehicle must be stopped or moving less than 3 mph with the transmission in NEUTRAL

I have a 94 Tercel - 4 speed on floor. I cannot put it into 4th gear without it popping out. I was told it needed a new shift cable. This car apparently has 2 cables. One for 1st and 2nd and one for 3rd...


Any car I ever had which had manual shift and was popping out of gear meant that it was time for another transmission. A junkyard can tell you what years and models of toyota transmissions will fit.
Yes they usually have two shifter cables, pull the console and look under your shifter.

Tranmission seems to come out of gear at various speeds.


Make sure you have the right transmission fluid chrysler has a special type of trasmission fluid I believe it ATF+4. change the fluid and filter and the add three quarts of ATF+4 and one quart of "Lucas transmission slip. This should fix the problems. Mike

Transmission won't engage in Toyota Tercel


pop off the cap on your clutch reservoir, if it's empty fill it up, leave the cap off, and then pump the clutch 20 times to try to get air out, that should work.

1996 Corolla Auto Transmission problem


Hi. 2005 Corolla CE. It's normal. They tend to do this when upshifting form 1st to 2nd gear. No timing chain readjustment needed.

96 Corolla. Overdrive not working properly, if not engaging after 45mph constantly. If driving on the city, is normal, but not after 45mph, when the car is trying to engage overdrive in order to save gas and preserve the trans gears. If not able to get help at the dealership, find another one and explain them the situation.
