All other doors and the window with the wiper on at rear open ok I have tried using wd40 that has had no effect. i have taken the lock off and the plastic mechanism seems ok. Could it be the little motor with what looks like a (fuse)under it causing the problem.Any way of seeing if power is getting to it

Hi, will the rear tailgate not open ? Have you tried testing the fuse it should be located under the bonnet/ hood back right hand side F 31 .this window is more complex than others given that doors need to be unlocked, tailgate opening handle switch needs to function .
is there a contact pannel in to door frame for the tail gate? if so the contact may be corroded or dirty open the tailgate and use WD40 or eqivent or a bit of aftershave on a cloth to clean up the contacts. 2 if there is a wire between the body and the tailgate check to see if its as broken with a lot of opening and closing of the tailgate this flexes the cable and maybe one of the wires has broken inside and will need replacement.
Usually just one of the linking rods that got unhooked, or a doorlock motor that is now malfunctionning. You need to take apart the plastics and covers on the inside of the tailgate to have a clear view of the mechanism and pinpoint the rod that's not working, or pinpoint the motor for the doorlock to test it out. Be warned though, in some cases the tailgate needs to be opened to take the covers off. If you feel like they won't come off at all and don't see any screws left to take out, don't pry too much so you don't break it, and take it to the dealer to get them to open it up. It may cost a bit more, but at least if they break it while taking it off, they're gonna pay to replace it and they will also fix it.
disconnect battery reconect after 5 mins on reconnection rear window
will go down , use key in rear lock to reset rear window, door lock
should now work, if not try rear door relays behind left hand rear
The rear window has to be completely down in order to move the tailgate! You should be happy that your window is stuck up, unlike mine which is stuck all the way down! I have to completly take apart my tailgate!! If you want to try a trick to get the rear window down, my bronco has a rear window switch right next to the headlight knob, take the 2 purple wires on that window switch, and cross them, if your motor still works and if the wires are good, that should make the window go down!!! good luck, hope that helps!
Check in your user's manual for your fuse location on the rear windshield wiper. These grand cherokee's have electronic actuators in every door. Inside these actuators they have very little motors and move everything via plastic. Very bad design flaw, as most of these actuators are 300-400 dollars to replace. You can find ones in salvage yards for 50 though. On your rear hatch, the door and the window are run by this actuator.
