Those switches make continuity ( makes the circuit to the brake light ) when we brake our vehicle, then when brake pedal is not being pushed it disengages the circuit, therefore turning off break lights.
Use an ohmeter with no voltage applied to ciruit , check switch With switch engaged ( zero or about zero ohms ), switch disengaged should show infinity ( nothing on the ohmeter ).

1995 Geo Prizm brake lights do not work replace brake switch already checked fuses already

Did you check for voltage to and from brake switch on proper wire colors? Use a testlite to check for voltage, you can see the wire colors in the diagram. At the proper fuse, not only check the fuse, check the fuse circuit for voltage. You can see the top wire is fuse protected and hot all the time. When the brake switch is activated that little line with arrow-head moves to the other terminal and that wire becomes hot.

99 chevy lumina brake lights dont work

if fuses are good then check the brake light switch. one wire should have battery voltage all the time and power on the 2nd wire only with the brake pedal is pushed. if you have no power on the 2nd wire but on the feed wire then the switch is bad. if you have power going into the switch and out then you will have to check for a brake in the wire going to the rear brake lights. check the ground for the sockets if diagnosis goes this far.

Tail lights work but break lights do not. fuse is ok.

replace brake light switch, it's mounted just above brake pedal under dash. Small switch w/couple of wires coming from it - easy fix. (common prob)

Brake lights out

check system fuse, check out brake light bulbs, check the brake light switch thats on top backside of brake pedal. it may need replaced or adjusted. Use a test light that is grounded and with the key in the "on" position test for power at one side (wire) of the switch, then press the brake pedal while testing the opposite side (wire). It should illuminate the test light, if electrical power is connected through the switch go to the next step. If no power is detected through the switch the brake light switch has failed and replacement is required. If your car is equipped with more than two wires integrated into the brake light switch a car repair manual is needed to locate the proper brake light circuit wiring.

Right and left brake lights do not work when brake pedal depressed. Both tail lamps work as well as both turn signals

Hi,
check the brake light switch located in the brake pedal area. Normal procedure is to remove the two wires and connect a jumper' wire between them, check and see if the rear brake lights operate. Check the brake light switch and see if it is adjustable. If so, re-connect the removed wires, adjust the position of the switch untill the brake lights operate, when the brake pedal is depressed, then secure the brake light switch.

Push brake paddle no brake light

The brake lights are not working due to fault in brake light fuse. Or the other reason is fault in wirings if the fuse is checked out OK. If both the brake light fuse and wirings checked out OK then its time to check the brake light switch. To find the switch follow the brake pedal up and look for a small black plastic switch with a small wire bundle going to it. Grab hold of the switch and gently try to push up or down on it. Many a times moving the switch solves the problem in other cases the brake light switch needs to be replaced. Thanks.

Bad or borken wire harness in the steering coloum. check power to brake switch, should have power on one side, if not check the fuse if fuse is good and you have no power then your turn signal switch or harness is bad.
