Question about 2001 Buick Century

Son and I replaced the radiator.son drove the car and it peged the temp gauge,he drove it home about a mile and a half.the next day I found that a hose was never tightend. Secured and filled,now the temp gauge peggs and the upper hose is too hot to hold the lower I can hold

With the engine cold, check the coolant level (a lot of times, if a hose isn't tightened it will leak coolant). The surprising thing is that it didn't bust the hose off of it's union. I would also check your water pump for leakage around the weep hole (it may be underneath the water pump pulley arm, or it may be atop of it). If this looks okay, take the serpentine belt off and try rocking the pulley left to right and up to down. If the pulley moves about, the bearings are bad and the water pump is not pumping the coolant through your engine. The upper radiator hose being hot is normal as that is where the hot coolant that is running through the engine enters the radiator to cool. If the lower hose isn't hot at all (like you have no problem holding it), it sounds like a clogged radiator. Was the radiator you purchased for installation used?

Take the hose off and check to see it the shipment cap is still on the intake radiator neck and the bottom neck causing the blockage of antifreeze and your going to have to replace the thermostat since it's most likely damaged due to the over heating. The thermostat has either failed shut or you failed to remove a transit blanking plug in the radiator before you fitted it

Remove the thermostat cover and take it out

You can run the car without a thermostat as their prime reason for being there is to warm the engine up quickly when the car first starts

fans came late on those car,like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block,and coolant has hard time to pass through,and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high,even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

First question is what constitutes "overheating".
Since the car has been parked for years, the thermostat could be sticking closed.
The cooling system could have air pockets and need to be bled.
The water pump may be corroded inside and not pumping enough volume.
If the gauge goes above half way, the fans should start up. But half way should be more or less normal, not hot yet.
I would look at flow problems first, beginning with removing the thermostat and driving it without one for a few days. Also check and see if there is a process to bleed the cooling system of air.

Subarus can be challenging to "burp" Sometimes it takes several attempts to get the air out of the system. The procedure is simple. Top off the radiator, squeeze the hose a few times to help get the air out, replace the cap and start the car. let it idle or drive slowly near home with the heat on high. once the temp gauge begins to rise, if there is no heat get the car back to the driveway before the temp gauge gets half way. Shut the engine off wait for it to cool, at least 10 minutes. Then check the radiator again. If there is still air top off again and repeat. After 3 or 4 attempts if there is still air and or the coolant reservoir seems to be filling, try replacing the radiator cap. If this doesn't solve the problem, It may be a head gasket.

are you sure the cooling fans are working?
Is the coolant temp gauge telling the truth?
have you lifted the hood and heard the coolant bubbling into the overflow?
Or heard the tinging sound of a red hot engine?
If he did a liquid test with the dye,and it changed colors it should have changed very fast,
Another thing to think about if he was to take the fan belt off,and pull the thermostat housing off,and removed the thermostat,Now pour coolant into the thermostat hole to almost the top,Now start the car and see which side the bubbles come from,left or right,that will be the gasket that is leaking not both.

Periodic Anti-freeze leak.


the ac and radiator are two seperate systems ,the electric fan is common to both of them ,be sure your fan is working and are you filling the over flow to the correct hot and cold level?
