The abs lights came on, fuel gauge showed 1/4 full when empty, the speedy showed zero when driving, the rev counter was all over the place. Then there was an alarm sound for half a minute when stationary and the speedo went to 80mph.

something must be grounded on your instrumental panel, try replacing the relay or fuse.
