Make sure that the engine is jacked up and is sitting straight so you can pull the axel out. The engine may be putting too much force on the the tranny so you cannot puch the axel through

I need to replace the clutch on 1997 vw jetta, does it have a cluth cable that would need to be replaced, or is it more complicated?

Most modern clutches have a hydraulic line. Emphasis on most, but this is a moot point for a production vehicle. What it should be is this: the clutch pedal is connected to a reservoir, which accepts DoT #3 brake Fluid (Usually), has a hydraulic line going down to the clutch, and either outside the transmission, or right inside it, is a slave cylinder that activates the actual clutch forks.

How do i change the clutch cable on a vw jetta it a 97

97 VOLKSWAGEN CABRIOLET/ JETTA CLUTCH CABLE REPLACEMENT

Place a jack under the lever on the gearbox to lift up the arm enough to remove the retaining clip on the engine-end of the clutch cable. Remove the clips and pull the cable loose from the transmission. Then go into the dash and remove the instrument cluster/ gauges to gain access to the pedal end of the cable. You'll need to pop off the plastic clips left and right of the dash to remove the plastic insert in front of the gauge cluster, then two screws and two plugs on the back of the gauges takes care of that step. Push the clutch cable in, and look for the round end of the cable where it's stuck into the top of the pedal. Pop it out with a screwdriver and pull the cable out under the hood. When you insert the new cable, you may need to tap the rounded end in with a hammer and punch or screwdriver to get it to seat back in the pedal assembly.

Clutch replacement instructions for 1986 VW Jetta

The release bearing goes in the back of the transmission. You'll need to remove the round "VW" cap on the end of the transmission. I would need to see the pilot bushing to know for sure. It could be the starter bushing or the clutch pushrod bushing.

Mt 1997 vw jetta gls won't go in any gears

Hello;
If your Jetta is a manual transmission, the clutch disc facing is probably gone. If it is an automatic, there are a number of things to check. Is transmission full of fluid? Does fluid smell burnt? Is there metal inside the oil pan? Hope this helps and rate me high.
Thanks;
Rich
