When you pull up the headrest you can take a small screw driver and go down the headrest post until you feel a notch.Carefully run the tip of the driver into the notch and one side will unclip. Hold that up and do the other post and the headrest will come out.The notch is about 1/2 inch down the post and the notchs are on the same side of the post in both locations. e.g. if the notch on 1 post is on the outside then it will be on the inside of the other post.
Good luck. Fairly easy but be patent. I have done hundreds of them.

It's quite easy if you have the right tools. Take a old windshield wiper blade and remove the metal stainless steel strips. Cut them into 3 inch pcs. Bend it into the shape of an "L" (1"x2" roughly). Trim the long end into a point. Make two of them. Climb into the back seat behind the seat you what to remove the head rest from. Lift the headrest all the way up, Insert the long end of the "L", down the back side of the headrest shaft 3/4 of the way down. The short leg of the "L" should be pointing at you. Using both hands, and force the short part of the "L" to the right of both shafts. What your trying to do is to slide the flat part of the "L" between the shaft and the retaining clip. It only catches on the right side of both shafts. The short part of the "L" may end up pointing at the right frt headlight before it releases the clip. You'll know that you got it when you're able to lift the headrest straight up and out. The clip stays in place and life is good. Good luck

I don't know how to remove them entirely from the seats themselves. Can't find a button or gadget that releases them. I want to install seat covers and need the headrests to come off first.

usually headrests are locked in place at the sides of the rods but if they don't have any release buttons they should just pull straight up and out.

I need to remove my headrest to change my seatbelt guide ; i can t get headrest to come off. Thank you

Pull the seat fabric down in front to expose the plastic piece that the headrest bar inserts through. You will see a small wire clip inserted through plastic. Remove it by prying with small flat head screwdriver. Repeat on other side. Headrest will then slide out.

Headrest 2002 cavalier

Try this i found this at another site sounds like it should work

01. Sit in the rear seat facing the front seat you will be removing the head rest from
02. Lean the front seat back so you are looking down at the head rest
03. Pull the head rest up as far as it will go
04. Take a small flat head screwdriver and slide in into one of the holes surrounding the head rest poles
05. Move it around until you feel some resistance (if you're lucky, you might be able to move the fabric a little and actually see the clip you need to remove)
06. Wiggle the screw driver around until the clip pops out (it may take a while, but eventually it will pop out)
07. Repeat steps 4-6 for the second head rest pole
08. Once you get the head rest off, turn it upside down and you will see two very thin metal discs holding the seat belt guide onto the head rest, you need to remove these
09. Take a screwdriver and pry up on the discs
10. Once you get the discs up a little bit, put some soap on the head rest poles
11. Take a towel and start twisting the discs, continue doing this until they

Headrest removal

Usea small flat screwdriverand run down along side the inside of the headrest rod. You will unclip 1 side and the rod will release. Do the same on the other and the headrest will come off. When you want to put back on just install and push down. Follow same procedure when you want to remove again. It is a little touchy but as soom as you remove 1 you will become a expert. I have done hundreds of those in the past couple years.

69 Plymouth Road Runner headrest Removal

yes this is a common minor issue with these headrest. where the little button at the bottom is you should be able to just hold that in and slowly liftup on the headrest and it should come out with ease. if this does not work you have only one more option and that is to gently remove the seat cover its self from the seat foams all the wayup to the headrest holes ( NOW if it is orig fab/leather or vynil you will have to be EXTREMELY CAREFUL not to destroy your seat covers in the process of this. i recomend in this case you take it to a professional if that is not the case keep reading) if it is orig vynil you will need a blow dryer to loosin the vynils grip on the foams if it is fabric it is just going to take a little bit more time to wiggle it off of there! then when you have all of that off in the location of the headrest you should be able to push the headrest up thru the orig holes . that is what i know . i hope this helps you out without damage to your very sweet RR
