Sounds like stuck lifter or collapsed lifter try and egine cleaner and change oil this often frees up stuck lifter, if still ticking then likely need to replace lifter, check pulgs and if plug from that clinder is darker then valve not opening need to fix

Where is the fuel pump relay on a 1988 ford ranger

its a little black box under the hood ...

TIP
on these older (1988) rangers , they have a fuel shut off (incase of roll over) that needs to be reset on occasion.
This shut off is located in the passengers foot area just forward of the passengers door on the floor.
remove that kick pannel and press the red button on top of that to reset it.

I have a 88 ford ranger that bogs like out of gas but turning the key quickley off and then back on fixes it for a mile then it does it all over, is this feul injectors or the computer?

well to be honest that kinda sounds like a fuell filter problem check ur fuel filter it is located on the driver side just behind the motor down under the floor board, just follow the fuell line. if thats not the problem then check the injectors but it sounds like a fuell filter if u want more of an explination my email is bubba_dodge1500@yahoo.com

"check Engine" will not turn off.

Take it to Autozone or other chain parts store, most of them will (for free) plug into your computer and get the code and tell you what it needs

My friend just got a 1988 ford ranger  v6 2.9L and has a valve tap and was wondering what different kind of ways he could fix this

if its an ohv type the most common fault is that the oil ways to the rocker shafts become blocked
so get some flushing oil drain the oil and replace with the flushing oil and run for the time stayed on the can then Change to good quality oil and new filter
then remove the rocker covers and check and adjust the valve clearances
if its an ohc type its all hydraulic adjustment
you could try flushing as above but apart from that the only other way is to change the lifters and followers
hope this helps

No spark at all!

you need to check the fuses again under the hood and under the dash if all are good look for a bad fuse link if you melted wires you had to blow fuses or fuse link
