Depends on the car and the problem.
The hydro-boost gets pressure from the power steering pump on some models, so the pump could affect the hydro-boost but usually not the other way around. You could disconnect the hydro-boost lines and the power steering should still work.

How does the hydro boost fell "funny" - does the brake pedal go to the floor? Do the brakes lock up? engage immediatly? Does the brake light stay on, come on while brakes are applied? Have a diagnostics test done on it at a local auto parts store (usually a free service; stores may vary) and see if any codes show up. If so, the person submitting the test can tell you what the code(s) mean, and what to do to fix the problem.

  1. Fill pump reservoir with fluid to minimum system level, FULL COLD level, or middle of hash mark on cap stick fluid level indicator.
  2. ImportantWith hydro-boost only, the oil level will appear falsely high if the hydro-boost accumulator is not fully charged. Do not apply the brake pedal with the engine OFF. This will discharge the hydro-boost accumulator.
  3. If equipped with hydro-boost, fully charge the hydro-boost accumulator using the following procedure:

  9. Start the engine. Rotate steering wheel from left to right. Check for sign of cavitation or fluid aeration (pump noise/whining).
  10. Verify the fluid level. Repeat the bleed procedure if necessary.

What causes the brakes and power steering to go out at the same time?

Are you a diesel? If you are do the recall ,for the hydro boost (brakes) you sound like it.There is a recall on the hydro boost and yes this is a power steering assist, and a brake power assist

Yes, your brakes are boosted by the power steering pump rather than by vacuum. I don't think it's air in the system. More likely your pump has failed, but you can try bleeding the pump. Here is a procedure from autozone.com:

Observe the following:
Use clean, new power steering fluid type only Hoses touching the frame, body or engine may cause system noise. Verify that the hoses do not touch any other part of the vehicle. Loose connections may not leak, but could allow air into the steering system. Verify that all hose connections are tight.


NOTE Power steering fluid level must be maintained throughout bleed procedure.

  1. Fill pump reservoir with fluid to minimum system level, FULL COLD level, or middle of hash mark on cap stick fluid level indicator.

Loss of brakes and steering

sounds like you've got a bad power steering pump. i'm not familiar with your vehicle, but some brake boosters run off vacume from the engine and others run off the power steering pump and it's called hydro boost. if you have the hydro boost type, this is most likely your issue.

It could be defective it just gets install make sure you have enough power steering fluid at the power steering pump, I have tow trucks with hydro boosters and they just get install and that's it. return it and get another one.Hope this was very helpful.

Power steering went out along w/brakes

Does it have a hydroboost brake booster? Is the belt still on the p/s pump? Have you checked the power steering fluid level? If yes and good to all, replace the Power steering Pump.

Power steering & power brakes

Sounds to me like your power steering pump has gone bad. Being a vehicle with a hydro-boost brake system that would explain the power brake failure. Hydro-boost brake systems utilize pressurized power steering fluid to provide brake assist. In most lighter GVWR vehicles this function is performed by engine vacuum. There is a recall on certain Silverados and Sierras that addresses a faulty check ball in the booster, but your vehicle is affected by a steering issue as well. This would indicate to me that it is the pump. You can however check online to verify if your vehicle is affected by the recall. Hope this helps.
