Battery died, Recharged, car still won't start

My husband accidentally left the keys in the ignition in the ON (not cranked position) all night. The following day when this was found, we took battery and recharged it, but car won't start up now. It fires up for a plit second, but it won't stay cranked and/or running. What could this be now?

Sounds like the anti-theft system, try this, turn key on and walk away for 30 mins, after 30 mins turn key off, wait 15 secs, the try starting, this should reset the anti-theft system

Ignition switch won't enough to crank

your alternator or battery is probably bad. to test which one, while your engine is running (after being jumped if its not starting obviously), remove the positive cable from the battery. if the car dies, then you know its your alternator. it is common, although, for both of them to go out at the same time.

2003 Aurora, left key on and battery went dead. Recharged battery. Won't start. Turn key to on, security light out and check engine light on. Move key to start and nothing, back to on, one minut

Very interesting site here.. regarding your problem. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/
Another thought.. even though you charged the battery, it's not at all uncommon for a car battery to be very damaged by fully discharging. Especially if not new-ish. One or more cells in it may be bad causing the overall voltage to be under normal. This alone can cause the problem you have. I would try jumping it with another car or test the battery to see if it's got at least 12.7 to 12.9 volts when sitting doing nothing. Good luck.

Does the engine crank or do you get a click noise. if you getting a clicking then the start is bad, if the engine is cranking you will need see if are getting gas to the engine and also spark to the spark plugs. if it cranks then look at a crank position sensor

Runs fine for a wile then dies battery drained

Hi
A car battery can run down for any of several reasons:
  • You accidentally left the lights on or some other accessory that pulls power from the battery even when the ignition key is off.
  • The battery is not being recharged while the vehicle is being driven (you have a charging problem)
  • There is a key off parasitic electrical drain on the battery because a relay is sticking, a module is not shutting down, or there is a shorted diode in the alternator.
  • Your battery is old and will not hold a charge anymore. The battery needs to be replaced.
Most of the time if the battery is fairly new and keeps getting drained have the mechanic check the alternator if its charing the battery.
Thanks for using Fixya.
