SOURCE: Servicing my Mercedes C200

Gearbox -> Synthetic automatic transmission fluid
Differential -> Either 90W engine oil or 85W90 gear lubricant
Engine oil -> Not really sure of the weather in Uganda but I take it it stays pretty warm all year long, probably 20W-40 or 15W-40 synthetic
Spark plugs -> Well there could be a long debate over that... if you're having engine performance/missing problems i'd try replacing them right away but with any gasoline ignition system i try to replace the plugs about once a year... plug wires about 5 years... regardless of condition. In my case, i don't usually go for expensive "platinum" or whatever kind of plug that costs about 10 times as much and usually don't do much of a difference... I'd rather buy reasonably priced spark plugs and replace them regularly, and get a much better result and more money in my pockets... because even if you did buy the expensive ones you usually end up replacing them at about the same time you would have the cheaper ones, with the same effect

SOURCE: how to tackle transmission oil change on '97 Mercedes E200

Hello, Check the kickdown switch that is located on the floor below accelerator pedal. Pull the carpet back under the pedal and you will see a black switch with a 2 pin connector. Disconnect the switch and see if this helps. If it does help, your kickdown switch is stuck in the down position and needs replacement. This will cause it not to shift until you are at a high RPM.
If you find this information to be correct would you please enter a "fixya" rating.

SOURCE: BMW 523 Auto gerbox when cold change from 1 to 2 gear is hard

hello there

The problem is with the gear oil. To keep ahead of the rest BMW started what they call life time oil for their gear boxes, though that sounds great it doesn't really work in reality, they have now gone back to recommending a gear oil change every 60k miles.

In short you need to change your gear oil and soon, the oil in your gear box is no longer effective and will damage the gear box. You'll need about 5 litres for your car and costs around £15 a litre, expensive stuff!! I had the same problem with my 328i auto, the dealer was clueless and kept quoting the lifetime oil, I changed the oil and the problem has gone and it's so much smoother.

Hope this helps, please don't forget to rate me.

A160 elegance model 2001 5 door hatch back, gear not changng, is chances to fix itthere

Disclaimer - beware - these little cars are very complex and easy to destroy computers.

1st option: No details re history so will assume it is in limp mode only driving in 2nd or reverse?
If so check fluid level in gearbox when hot -run for 20 minutes in driveway should do the trick. Find sealed filler hose and insert aftermarket dipstick. (There are youtube videos on how to make DIY one out of curtain spring wire) If level alright it will be valve body grunge and needs expert auto to clean. Otherwise add EXACTLY 500ml of synthetic fluid from Mercedes. try operating after heating gearbox as before. If good get auto serviced.

2nd option: Operate emergency Park release if Gear change not moving. remove gear change module cover and check connections in circuit board.
Very good website called Lofty's A160 page for DIYER's

I have a Mercedes 220 CDI Auto Elagance saloon. The man took my car for an MOT and returned it as passed. This morning I drove off and it appears to be stuck in 2nd gear as it won't change up. The...

first.the mot is a govenment safety check,it is not a mechanical/electrical fitness test.so it passed an mot.....
now the gearbox W is for winter setting,it allows the car to pull away in 2nd gear and change slightly higher,NOTHING ELSE.
the gearchange has nothing to do with cruise control..or vice versa...
if the car wont go into/allow you to change then either its the selector plate or the gearbox inhibitor at fault......could go anytime.

How do I used the automatic gearbox?

p is for park, always put into this mode when starting up or your finished with the car.
n is for nuetral, used for warming up on very cold mornings.do not leave car unnattended EVER.
d is for drive.the car will change gear itself for a given road/engine speed(for economy use only the first1/3rd of the gas pedal travel)
3 is for accending/descending a very steep hill where
changeing from 4 to 3/3 to 4 constantly up/down would overheat the gearbox, reducing efficiency.
2 and 1 are for pulling away in snow and mud when a wheelspin would not be beneficial.
stick shift is fun but auto is more comfortable....if used considerately..
