SOURCE: truck stalls while driving, will start again if wait ten minutes

Ok, this sounds like a weak fuel pump and clogged filter. if possible, you will need to change these two vital devices. I would also replace the air filter as well.

Inspect the injection system for faults as well. make sure all injectors are firing properly and on time. replace any injector that isn't functioning correctly.

SOURCE: 325i BMW, 2003 (Automatic) Fuel Pump/Filter or

your camshaft position sensor may be going bad. usually with an old car it tend to go bad. The top of sensor can be covered or gumed up with grease, oil, dirt and cause it not to detect the flywheel turning. Camshaft sensor send single to your DME to deliver fuel and sparks to you engine. If camshaft sensor goes bad it will seem like your fuel pump and ignition coil is bad even-though they are good. Faulty camshaft sensor may caused you to have this issue and problems such as sometime it run good and all of sudden it shut off, sometime its start good and others time is doesn't start. Once the sensor goes bad, the car will not run. There are two Sensor one for the fuel and one for the sparks, I would replace both sensor because soon or later if it will go bad, it will leave you stranded although if you replace one you might as well replace the other. Check the coil and test using the light or volts tester to see you getting power to the coil, next check if your fuel pump is working, fuel pump will not stay running unless the sensor sense the flywheel is turning from your camshaft sensor. next time when your car does not start, check if you getting spark and fuel. Both sensor will cost you around 130 bucks. assuming your DME, fuel pump, coil, wires, etc... is working. keep me update and I will try to walk you through. btw stop by at any auto part store and pick yourself up Haynes auto repair book for your car, its a great tools and investment to have for your next repair work if you plan to keep your car and get to know the heart of it. good luck and i hope that help some.

SOURCE: Engine stalls driving down the road or on take

Trouble Code 42 indicates that there may be a malfunction in the Electronic Spark Timing (EST) system. During cranking, the timing is controlled by the ignition module and the ECM grounds the EST line. It expects to see no activity on this line at this time. When the ECM enters EST mode, it applies +5 volts to the BYPASS line and expects to see voltage variations on the EST line.
Reasons for the ECM to set Code 42:
1. System in BYPASS mode (i.e. EST line supposedly grounded) but activity sensed on EST line
2. System in EST mode (i.e. BYPASS line driven with +5 volts) but no activity seen on the EST line

Possible causes include:
1. BYPASS line is open or grounded
2. EST line is open or grounded
3. Poor connections between ignition module and ECM
4. Poor routing of EST harness and/or poor quality ignition wires (EMI induced electrical noise
5. Faulty or incorrect ignition module
6. Faulty ECM
7. Faulty Pick Up Coil
8. Faulty Ignition Control Module
9. Faulty Crank Sensor or the Crank Sensor magnet probe could be cracked

Car Technical Problem

When was the fuel pressure regulator checked or replaced? What about the gas cap? Did you ever change THAT? Gas caps are pretty cheap, and pretty much "do it yourself" items!

Fuel problems

When it stalls out, remove both fuel filters and drain them into a measuring can. Take measuring can and see if contents fill even 1 filter. Then you will know if the filters are running dry and the engine is fuel starved.
It kinda sounds like you are losing fuel draw. As RPM climbs, the draw can not keep up above idle. Could be that fuel pump is playing out.
Other consideration is that problems are in high gear where RPM drops after advancing through gear range. Could be that there is a problem with the Crankshaft counter failing to Cue enough fuel for a load at Low RPM.
Think that experimenting with Downshifting or disengaging Overdrive when engine bogs, may provide clue.
Also check if engine has EGR, some only work in top gear, and as Diesels have Vacuum pumps, a failure could create stalling if EGR leaks.
