the hold button....means that while it is automaticly changing gears you can hold it in a certain gear.....for example.....you leave your street and you end up in a long line of cars....the car leaves first gear and changes to second , you press the hold button and it will stay in that gear until you release the hold button...it will then drive on as usuall.....or another example.....you leave your drive way and are going up a steep hill...you put your car in to 2 or S and press the hold button, the car will staay in that gear till you release the hold button and put the car in to D.

I have a Mitsubishi Galant 1998 automatic. Next to the gear lever is a button with HOLD written on it. What does this do?

that button when active keeps the car in gear. Meaning at 55 cruizin the highway when you push the hold button it keeps the car in overdrive and will not let passing gear activate. Its really useless and it was only installed for a few years before going to the power/economy switch also useless....

dose the car have a o/d button

if so it sounds like the end clutch has died in the auto and you will need to go to a auto specialist.

check you auto oil level first and go from there
